Presumably her dad or maybe that's why they're trying to promote her as a special star so she can get some funding but train in Spain. The truth is that she has not even achieved times comparable to national champions in her age group at european level which is where she lives. So why would Ghana government or corporations sponsor and indulge such vanities. If you give it to her to easily she will never learn the important lesson of earning your place and that ultimately means you'll never be a great athlete. So if she is that great let her go back to spain and come back next season with some REAL results at european, African Championship and national (ghana and spain) level. If she gets those results then the federation can think about sponsoring her. But she has to go out and earn it and work for it. That's how you build athlets if your intention is to develop winners. If all you want is some headlines and to skim a few dollars off the top, then you just make a mockery of sport.

Born in Canada, lived in caribbean and then moved to spain a few years ago. She lives and trains there. And my point precisely, if you can't win spanish national titles even in your own age category or national championships, then how can you expect to get senior results. She is not going to be able to catch up. At this year's Olympics we had a couple of 15 and 16 year olds who qualified through the heats to the finals. This girl came last in her heat of at the age of 14. No amount of spin can get beyond this truth. So any investment or sponsorship is misguided. She is behind. A good idea what the federtaion is thinking, find someone who has training and resources abroad and bring them in to represent while you build up the domestic probramme. But in reality you have to recruit 14 or 15 year olds wh oare pickd for national teams in europe or america that means they ae already top of the pile in a highly competitive environment. Not just any old 14 year old who can swim!

Kaya did not participate in any qualification event and her times were slower than paralympic results in same categories at international level. Ophelia Swayne however had won ACTUAL medals at international events for Ghana. She was banned and kicked aside because the president of the federation was 'persuaded' somehow to promote kaya as a wild card and get her a slot at the olympics which was a really sad end to Ophelia's career. After spending years preparing for her chance and spending time, money and energy at the last moment she was overlooked not because she had not earned a chance because her results were actually greater than Kaya's who I believe has not even won a national medal in Spain where she lives and trains, or European title even in her U14 age category nevermind at junior or senior level. So they have made amockery of the system, the athlete, the athletes' family and the sport. Why does this matter? Well because it is hard to persuade youngsters and their families to invest time, effort and money in training for this type of thing if at the end of it is left to chance and the decision of one man who can decide who he favours with no accountability. IT leaves the system vulnerable to corruption by individuals who can be 'persuaded' to change their judgement. AND it stops any potential sponsor from getting involved in sponsoring the sports in Ghana as no corporation would want to get involved in sponsoring an athlete if at the end of the day they are held hostage by the president of the federation who can just block them they will not get involved in a system that is being run like that. So who suffers? Ghana, the youth and the sport. I have no personal knowledge of either girl or their families but I have followed this story and looked up the resuls which are easily available on the web. Do your own research and you will see what you are being sold is deception and a bending of the rules of the system. For what reason and who benefits I know not!

Exactly. But the way they report it is to say that she came third. She came third out of three ie she came last! She has a good pr person working for her. It's not about the young girl who should do what she can to pursue her goals. What bothers me is that another swimmer who had worked hard towards this goal of going to the Olympics and had actually won international medals was booted out in favour of a 14 year old who has never even won a national title in SPain! and no international titles and no senior rankings and no senior competitions and with a swim time that is slower than paralympians at international level. So how does a decision like that get made and why? Why are presidents of sports federations in ghana allowed to do this? And then they feed it to the public and even the Vice President! It's appalling. Her father should not allow this it is teaching her daughter that privilege can be lobbied for and bought instead of teaching her to work hard and earn her place. It's like buying a kid a ticket to disneyworld - 'there you go princess now go to the Olympics'! It's not what sports is about. Sport is supposed to be clean and about merit, work, dedication and commitment. When the president of a federation disrespects that by kicking out or banning an athlete to stop them from qualifying as happened here with Ophelia Swayne or Martha Bissah in Athletics, they are effectively disrespecting the flag, the youth and the sport they are supposed to be representing. It's not doping but it is as bad because the system cannot be corrupted. So yeah...it is stupid to promote a kid who has actually not really achieved any real results not even at highschool level.
