He was one of the talismanic "never -say - die" warriors for the Phobians. He participated in many memorable and dramatic showdowns agaisnt Asante Kotoko and against Great Olympics.
In 1963/64 his last minute bullet drive led to Kotoko's defeat by Hearts of Oak.
In 1966/67 he was there in that match with Kotoko when skipper Addo Odamettey started the free-fight in a 3-2 loss to Kotoko.
He participated in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. He played with herculean strength in all games. The first game was a 1-1 draw with El Salvador with a wonderful goal by Osei Kofi. The next game was a 2-2 draw with Hungary with goals from Sammy Stevens and Ibrahim Sunday. The third game was an atrocious 3-5 loss to Israel due to poor officiating. George Alhassan was booked for "playing soccer like Judo". After the game he stood solidly behind skipper Addo Odamettey as he rushed towards referee Michel Kitabdjian and knocked him out with a left-right combination. It was as vicious as the case in 1958 in Lagos when Ohene Djan's wife was so disgusted with the officiating in a Ghana versus Nigeria Jalco Cup match. She rushed like a jet from the touchline and into the center circle and came face to face with the referee. Then as fast as lightening, she threw a three punch combination that felled the referee. He had to be revived for 30 minutes before the game reumed in a 2-3 defeat for the Black Stars.
George Alhassan participated in the miracle of El-Wak stadium when the Phobians scored four goals against Hafia Club of Conakry starring the wizards Bengally Sylla, Papa Camarra, Petit Sourry, Seidu Bangourra, Fofana.
Great George was also in that Hearts v Olmpics game when George Otinkorang's corner kick sailed right into the top corner of Hearts goalpost leading to a defeat for the Phobians. He and Thunder Anas, Robert Foley, Mama Bomber Acquah,Abeka "Why Worry" Ankrah Amusa Pele Gbadamosi and Afro Joe Dakota could not prevail that day against Fred Tettey , Tetteh Boogie, Appettor and the Olympics' warriors.
In particular George Alhassan played in that infamous game when Great Olympics played with 13 players against the Phobians 11 due to faulty refereeing by first time FIFA referee Hulede.
Rest in Peace thou art a great exponent of the game and your name will forever be engraved in the Annals of the history of Ghana soccer.

My friend, the miracle of El Wak was against Mufulira Wanderers FC of Zambia. George Alhassan was not in the team. He had retired several years before that time. Remember he played alongside Addo Odametey (who was a coach at the time Mama Acquah, Anas, and Polo were young players in the early 70's) in the 60's. The players that played in that match were(I have omitted the defence) Adolf Armah(6), Robert Hammond(7), Mama Acquah(8), Peter Lamptey(9), Anas Siedu (10), and Ahmed Polo(11). The game against Hafia club of Guinea (again I have omitted the defence)featured Adolf Armah (6), John Nketia Yawson (7), Robert Hammond (8), Kingsley Asabir (9), Anas Siedu (10) and Douglas Tagoe (11). Again the match in which Olympics fielded an extra player was not against Hearts but against Vasco Da Gama of Brazil. Santos of Brazil had played against Hearts and drawn 2-2. Pele (Edson Erantes De Nacinento)scored for Santos and Ga Mantse scored for Hearts. The two great players took a memorable picture together if you could cast your mind back. Olympics then invited Vasco Da Gama to play them and were soundly trashed, to even the playing field, they slipped an extra man to prop up the right full back position. When their opponents realized Olympics had suddenly become tough to crack on the left side of the field, they asked the referee to stop the match for a head count. I would be happy to correct you anytime you want facts and figures on Ghana soccer.

Thanks my brother. I was in such a hurry to configure a tribute for Ga Mantse and messed with the facts. He was on the injured and semi-retired player list when Hearts beat another Zambian team called the Kabwe Warriors 9-3 on aggregate in 1973 at the Accra Sports Stadium. This was a game that featured soccer engineer Mike Alhassan, Afro Joe Dakota, younger Bomber Mama Acquah, Amusa Gbadamoshieof Hearts against Godfried Chitalu the one man forwardline of the Kabwe Warriors.
Now back to the Miracle at El-Wak. It was the second leg of the 1977 Africa Club Champoinship. Ga Mantse's playing days were over but was still the epitome of the Never Say Die Spirit of the Phobians. He attended most of the team practices gving useful advice every now and then.
Now back to the drama of El-Wak. Hearts of Oak lost the first leg in Zambia to the Ndola Copperbelt based Mufulira Wanderers due to the absence of Mohammed Polo the dribbling magician. The Ethiopian referee for this game was replaced by Hussein Fahmy of Egypt. Hearts complained about the conduct of Ethiopian referees against Ghana teams. There was the case of referee Ayele Tessema who robbed Kumasi Asante Kotoko in favour of Congo Englebert in 1967/68. This referee Hussein Fahmy ignored several fouls committed by the Mufulira Waderers in the dying minutes of the game. The Hearts line-up was goalies Suppey and Annan, Sarpei Nunoo, Ofei Ansah, Yusifu Salifu, Micah, Adolf Armah, Tanko Ayuba, Douglas Tagoe, Anas " Thunder" Seidu, Peter " Goal Thief" Lamptey, Mama "Bomba" Acquah,Mohammed " The Dribbling Magician" Polo, and Robert Hammond. The Mufulira line-up included skipper Ackim Musenga, Thomas Castella Bwalya, Mukwasa, acrobatic goalie Benard Kabwe, Mwashomwa and Gerald Mugunle. Hearts lost the first leg 5-2 and must score at least 3 goals to advance based on the away goal rules of the time. There was suspense, fear and uncertainty as the game progressed. For sure it was agonizing for Ga Mantse as well. Then nimble -footed Polo took over the game conjuring magic moves and footwork. In the 59th minute he outwitted the Zambians and passed to Thunder Anas for the first goal. Later in the 79th minute Polo dribbled the Mufulira Wanderers midfield and passed to Peter Lamptey who made the score 2-0. Still the GDR coach D. Pfifer of Hearts of Oak was worried . In the 88th minute Polo manouvered around two Zambian defence players and passed to Bomber Mama Acquah who ran at top speed , with the clock winding down on the game, and passed to Thunder Anas. Never Say Die. He delivered a thunderbolt shot into the top corner of the net beyond the reach of acrobatic Bernad Kabwe. The final score was Hearts 3 Mufulira Wanderers 0.
On the 3-2 victory of Hearts over Kotoko on August 2 1964, Ga Mantse scored the winning goal . The Hearts line-up was goalie Addoquaye Laryea, Adu Darko, Anum Okine, James Ocran, Willie evans, Akuetey Armah, Mohammed Lawal, Amadu "Tear Away" Akuse, George Alhassan, Amusa Gbadamoshie and Salami. The line-up for Kumasi Asante Kotoko was Mensah/ Tuffour, Paa Nii Lutterodt, Assumeng, Opoku Mensah, Emmanuel Boateng, Kwame Nti, Osei " Wizard Bribbler" Kofi, Wilberforce " Bulldozer " Mfum, Abukari Gariba, Mohammed Salisu and Steve Akuffo. Mfum opened the scoring in the 40th minute and Amusa "Pele" Gbadamosi equalized in the 50 minute. Then Salami made the score 2-1 for Hearts with a penalty shot. Qsei Kofi made it 2-2 with some wizard dribbling and a carpet shot. Then Ga Mantse George Alhassan took over and made it 3-2 for Accra Hearts of Oak.

Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club is sorry to learn the demise of one its most illustrious sons, George Alhassan whose sudden death occurred on the 26th of July, 2013 at the age of 72.
The former Hearts of Oak striker, born on 9th September, 1941, led the line for the Phobians in the 1960s through to the early 1970s. His playing mates were Abeka Ankrah, Robert Foli, Joe Ghartey, Joe Dakota and others. George Alhassan, affectionately called "Ga Mantse" for his stint with Accra Hearts of Oak was a loyal servant of the Black Stars. The former Black Stars striker also played in the 1968 Olympics game where Ghana finished third in their Group behind Hungary and Israel respectively.

On August 17 1964 Accra Hearts of Oak locked horns with Real Republicans at the Accra Sports Stadium. Amusa Pele Gbadamosi with a sequence of body swerves and crazy football put the ball behind goalkeeper Dodoo "Magic Hands" Ankrah in the 15th minute. The one and only Ga Mantse got a wicked pass from Ganiru Salami the ubiquitous dribbler; he controlled the ball at high angle and buried a pile-driver shot behind Dodoo Ankrah. Then Edward Acquah took a thunderbolt free kick that boomed across the Hearts penalty box into the roof of the net beyond great goalie Addoquaye Laryea. These were followed by an amazing goal manufactured by Salami and Amadu Akuse and scored by Amusa Gbadamosi , who at this time has surpassed Osei Kofi , Kwami Adarkwa and Salami in skill and agility; the only problem is his lack of desire to train seriously. Hearts won this game 3-1.

Ghana must strive to have a football Hall of Fame to enshrine all our great players. It is sad after their playing days the nation forgets about them. Kwasi Nyantakyi must do something like that to leave a legacy.
But Captain George Alhassan, "Ga Mantse",you made us happy to go home on Sundays in all those memorable matches against the Great Olympics, Asante Kotoko, B.A. United, and all the great teams of years gone.
May you Rest In perfect Peace.

Please take note that this George Alhassan was the Original one. He played for HEARTS and BLACK STARS in the late 50s, 60s and to about 1972 in the days of Aggrey Fynn, Baba Yara, Osei Kofi Wilber Mfum Osumanu, Abukari, Ed Acquah and in Hearts, colleagues like Amusa Gbadamoshie, the 3-Musketeers(Abeka,Foley, Joe Ghartey) also Keepers Adoquaye Laryea,Dodoo Ankrah, Kisco Adansi and Lante F. "Duru". Then OLY had Keeper Naawu and players like Apetor and Tommy who were always Ganging up to fight him on the field. He was a friend of Sanni Abdulai then in Sekondi Wise. He was a Press Photographer, Old BLACK STARIAN. He was a very deadly and unassuming striker, NEVER EVER CONTAINED BY ANY DEFENDER in his days, He was however sinically injured by Oliver Acquah in a 'tackle from behind', during a match with Kotoko in Kumasi in the early 70s, giving way to Prince Amartey (Leftie) He did NOT play the Miracle at El-Wak and NOT of the FEARSOME-5-SOME fame. He was Popularly called "GA-MANTSE". The second George Alhassan was better known with OLY and the Black Stars in the mid 70s and early 80s when the STARS won the Cup of Nations in 78 & 82 in Ghana and Lybia. He is noted for displaying Bushy Jelly Curled Hair. A third George Al. popped up, but did not last long. I strongly believe that these are the TRUE facts for your consumption. In any was we join DAGBON to mourn a GREAT SON. Alhassan R.I.P.P!!!!!!!!
He was one of the finest strikers has produced.
May the Lord accept him in is bosom.

If George Alhassan outwitted you in 1968 at the Accra sports stadium then your bones are really dry. Kw33333, enough respect to you.
