Then what was he doing all these years as an assistant coach? More so, the investment is not needed while he is on the job. The guys has never coached even a local team gunner some experience as a decision maker. It seems like he has been impossed on the nation despite obvious observations that the blackstars is too big for him to manage.

Well for once the writer is right in saying that Appiah did not author this letter. The reason being that part of the letter says that " I ordered for him to be contacted over his absence but he said he could not depart from France because he was seeing his doctors" Dede made it know that kwesi Appiah called him and asked him not to come, so who is the "I" here referring to, if Appiah is the one who spoke to Dede? Appiah himsleves acknowledges talking to Dede when he says "I have personally explained the rationale behind the decision to Andre and I will continue to count on him in future matches if he is fit" He was clearly not in charge?

Congratulations to the Nigerian Super Eagles for winning the 29th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations. Let me also take this opportunity to give credit not only to their coach Stephen Keshi, but the players who did it as they say, for themselves and their fatherland.
I was also proud of the selfless leadership provided to the Malian team by veteran Seydou Keita. In fact, countless players stood out for me and let me also praise the likes of Jonathan Pitriopa, Mubarak Wakasu, Aristide Bance as well as Victor Moses and Mikel John Obi to mention just a few.
The leadership of African football need to take a critical look at what Keshi has achieved and ask themselves why, despite constant reminders about the ability of locals, do we still fail to take pride in our own products but continue to scour the backstreets of Europe in our desperate attempts recruit “fong kong” coaches to take charge of our national teams?
Why do we continue to marginalize indigenous coaches, deny them material support but are always prepared to pay obscene amounts of money to expatriate coaches, some of whom refuse to live in our countries and prefer to stay in Europe, only coming to Africa during the week that there is an official fixture looming?
The same coaches seem to resent living conditions in Africa, yet find nothing wrong in the color of the money they get paid by Africans. There is an exception though, and men like Claude Le Roy, Clemens Westerhof and Herve Renard have roughed it up in the respective countries they are working and have earned our respect.
But we members of the fourth estate are equally to blame for this mess. We tend to put undue pressure on local coaches, refuse to give them the respect and credit they deserve and always hammer them at the slightest opportunity and are the first to demand the hiring of a “foreign” coach.
Ghana has won the tournament a respectable four times and on each occasion, they were guided by an indigenous coach. They came very close this time around with Kwesi Appiah at the helm, but despite finishing fourth, I understand my colleagues down in Accra are already calling for his sacking!
Are we ashamed of our own? Why do we always find it so difficult to embrace our own countrymen but instead try to find fault with everything they try to do simply because we know them and grew up together in the same ‘hood?
Are we envious of what they have achieved while we still occupy the same positions at our respective places of employment where we are even considered as part of the furniture? And now we are consumed by resentment of our inability to ascend the ladder of life and therefore take it out on those that seem to be succeeding?
Is our obsession with European coaches as Keshi is asking, perhaps a reflection of our own state of mind and inferiority complex? Why is it then, that we would rather entrust the fortunes of our national team to an untried and untested European coach without any knowledge of Africa, than to a local coach?
If you think I am being a unfair to federations across the continent, then watch as local coaches qualify their respective countries for the Fifa World Cup in Brazil next year and then get fired or sidelined because they “are too inexperienced” to lead their country at a tournament like the World Cup.
I am willing to take a bet that at the end of the World Cup qualifying campaign, there will be countless so-called big name European coaches waiting on the wings to take over positions as coaches of us “gullible” Africans where they will be paid millions just for a four weeks job.
Of course, indigenous coaches are not angels either. And we have heard of shameful stories of favoritism as well as how they collude with football agents that “instruct” them to select certain players and they are guaranteed kickbacks for playing along.
It’s such a vicious circle; it breaks my heart that we never seem to learn. And perhaps that is why it will take us maybe a century to win the World Cup. Brazil has won the World Cup more than any other nation, check the nationalities of the coaches that were in charge and tell me if I am talking through my hat!
I hope Nigeria and the rest of Africa will show a little more trust and respect to the likes of Keshi and his deputy Daniel Amokachi especially now that they have proved that if they are left alone to do what they know best, they can deliver.

Hello,
Appiah Papa, I share your sentiments and certainly do not have any disagreements with your well thought out observations. However, one does not go to war leaving your best generals and big guns at home; likewise you don’t participate in a dance competition leaving behind your best dancers and expect to win. I believe, speaking for myself; most Ghanaians desperately want to see Akwasi Appiah succeed where these second rate foreign coaches failed, and as children of Dr. Nkrumah an absolute Pan Africanist we couldn’t have harbored any wish most dear to Ghana and Mother Africa as a whole than to see our very own at the helm of the table . In fact, we don’t have to belabor the point that African coaches can do the job, if not better; our brother Steve Kechi just answered the critics by being the second African to win the cup as a player and a coach joining his Egyptian brother. Between Ghana, Egypt, Cameroon, and Nigeria we’ve won the cup eighteen times, I’m not sure if they are all by African coaches, but I’m sure most were by them.
Let’s be frank, these local coaches have already proven themselves, take Sallas Tetteh winning the FIFA U20, Essien and his generation (Muntari, Paintsil, J. Mensah, M. Razak and Derick Boateng) eliminating Kaka, Ronaldinho and that class from the competition in the semis in the ‘90s, don’t quote me on this but, I recall Afranie was the coach at the time. The U20 and U21 are the last gateways to the big dance and if the local coaches can hold their own against the best of their foreign counterparts, I for one see no logical reasoning why they can’t do it at the big dance “WC”. The problem as I see it is the lack of trust, confidence and meddling in the matters of coaching by the football governing bodies in Africa towards the local coaches that is hampering the progress of local coaches.
Secondly, the lack of local coaches with stature within the coaching fraternity who can boldly speak and standup to authority without fear of losing their job, i.e. personalities like C. K. Gyamfi and Ben Koufie to name a few. These were coaches who commanded and demanded respect both from the players and administrators in tow, which allowed them to do their jobs without interference. Third and the greatest culprit of all our problems is the collapse and lack of support for the local leagues all over the continent which has depleted the fertile training grounds for the coaches to sharpen their skills, provide opportunities for both coaches and young players to familiarize and identify the strengthens and weaknesses of the best talents; opportunity for more playing time in their various countries before they’re sold off to foreign clubs only to be relegated be bench warmers. By the time these young talents come off the loaning circuits to secure regular playing time with the primary signing clubs, they’re either pass their prime or about to hit the journeyman status.
The backbone for our successes to winning four African cup titles was the strong and competitive local league, to which I dare say was entertaining, competitive and as memorable as any of the Euro leagues today. Growing up in the mid-sixties through the ‘70s, you couldn’t wait for the weekend to come along, so you can trek to Accra Sport Stadium for a match between Ashanti Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oaks, or match at the Kumasi Sports stadium between Kumasi Cornstones vs. Ashanti Kotoko, or Oly da dey Vs. Phobia phobia. The league was like a religion to any youngster growing up at the time; the fans and the nation supported the league wholeheartedly without any reservation; players were respected loved and adored like demi-gods by their fans; the players who were fortunate to ever wore the national jersey even for once became national and regional heroes and celebrities respectively for the rest of their lives.
The strong league fuelled a very competitive selection process that ensured the best got selected to the Black Stars. Thanks to the strong league in Ghana during the ‘60s and ‘70s, the national coach could summon up to four national teams (Black Stars, Black Meteors, Academicals and the Black satellites) simultaneously at any given time to represent the nation, all with equal chance of bringing home honor to the nation. Another benefit of a strong league is that it allowed the nation the luxury of a large pool of talents to assemble a strong team at any given time; without the added headache of injuries and long periods of camping. This was possible because most of the players play locally and are very familiar with each player’s strengths, weaknesses and style of play that helped as an added bonus for anticipation and adjustments on the field of play during a match.
Now back to the original question at hand that got me started with this long winded response; after re-reading the justification for dropping the Ayew brothers particularly Dede, the more I’m convinced I become that Coach Appiah is not firmly in control of the team. The following are the reasons for the stated position: If I recall correctly, two of the major criteria’s for call-up or selection for national assignment declared by Mr. Appiah at the assumption of his tenure were to be signed to a team with playing time and be injury free during call-up; I stand corrected, but, if this assertion is not erroneous then I have serious reservation with the rationale given for the exclusion of the Ayew brothers.
I quote from his letter “As Andre plans to arrive on Tuesday it means he would be unable to join any of my six training sessions before CAF’s Wednesday deadline for the submission of the final squad.
In line with my vision of taking only fit players for the Africa Cup of Nations, I have decided to work only with the players currently in camp.” Does Coach Appiah seriously want me to believe that he needed the six training sessions to assess or determine if Dede was up to snuff to be part of the team, or was he more concern about the physicians assessment of his fitness, which is it?
Except Magnificent Kwadwo Asamoah who is a delight to watch on the ball, none of the players call to camp was or were in better top form than the Ayew brothers; if he had applied his standard rule both boys surpass the standard by a mile in performance. The Ayew siblings are the current top scorers for a world class club so there was no excuse for dropping Jordan; since our only hope of winning the trophy was by scoring goals; now hindsight has shown the folly of this decision. On the other hand, if the concern was to assess Dede’s physical fitness, I don’t think the Black Stars medical doctor was in a better position to evaluate Dede’s condition better than his personal physician.
Establishment of behavior pattern, I believe Coach Appiah has known and worked with Dede from a boy to a Youngman during his apprenticeship under four foreign coaches; we can all agree Andre has never missed or come in late on any call-ups as far as I’m aware of, I may be wrong!. He demonstrated his dedication last year, when he played with a defective shoulder coming out of its socket on the field of play, yet never complained and stayed to finish the tournament. Such display of character, devotion and bravery is what I call patriotism and love of country. On like Kevin Prince Boateng who made good use of the opportunity given him and moved on (this is not an indictment, since he has not explained his reason for the abrupt retirement).
Andre has been an obedient, gallant and a happy warrior for Ghana; he has displayed exemplary leadership qualities for a very Youngman at his age, leading 2009 U20 team to win both the African and World cups all in the same year! Quite an accomplishment at such a young age, don’t you think? This young man is what I will refer to as the fearless Field Marshall who is ready to go to battle all be it a peaceful one at the call of his country and he will gladly sacrifice his life to secure a victory and honor for his nation. I think this is a trait that must be nurture and encouraged not discouraged. For the lack of evidence of a behavior pattern used as a rationale to drop him out of the team, I believe that should have earned him the benefit of a doubt until so established.
Now if we apply Coach Appiah’s call-up rule, there were a couple of players I believe met his expectations for call-up, such as Kumordze, Quincy Abeyie, the Addy boys, Inkoom, Muntari (I included him become he came back in the AC lineup before the tournament end) and our Great leader, good old John Mensah (resigned by his old French club, he brings calmness and tremendous experience. However, Vorsah has being a worthy replacement). I think if the coach had flown to Italy and Spain and explained to both Boateng and Essien the importance and the desire of the entire nation to end the AFCON cup drought, I believe both of the players are patriotic enough to reconsider. That will have confirmed his persuasive abilities as a coach, a critical asset of a good coach.
Performance evaluation is the next area I like to touch on. I recall when Coach Appiah was appointed there were flood of calls from Ghanaians encouraging or actually demanding GFA extend the same pay and fringe benefits granted “Plavi” the last Serbian coach to Akwasi Appiah which I believe was the just and fair cause to take. The rationale for the demand was if Mr. Appiah was going to take on the same duties as the head coach then he should equally be rewarded, that to me is a no brainer. It’s equally rational to expect that if he is going to be rewarded for his efforts as the head coach, he must be prepared to take on the headaches, risks and the criticisms that go with the job. I clearly remember Plavi was let go because he failed to deliver on his promise to bring home the trophy; I’m wondering why the GFA and some Ghanaians are applying double standards when it came to our own? A trophy is a trophy…is a trophy! ……is a trophy! If we expect to bring the best out of our local coaches, then we should not treat them with kids’ gloves. Just as much as the country demanded Appiah should be treated fair, we reserve the right to demand he (Appiah) earn his pay. Why should he be let off the hook? Is it because he’s our own? He should not get any breaks for his substandard performance; just as he will not give Dede the benefit of a doubt and harshly dropped him (so he claims).
In closing all was not gloom and doom, there were some bright spots and some revelations. First, I must congratulate the boys for showing up for duty and genuinely patriotic in their performance even if it lacked direction, that was not their job. My revelation or surprises of tournament were Mubarak Wakaso, Solomon Asante, Harrison Afful (I wonder why he’s not had a call-up all this while), Fatau Douda and Adomah. Agymang Badu was not his usual energy bunny, Mr. Helter skelter, Mr. Enforcer, however, I’II give him a pass, and he’s earned it. The defense on my part did a great job; the coordination among the four backs is beginning to jelly. I loved the “Blonde Beast” Mr. Vorsah, he made use of his size and strength, certainly played like a giant he is! What can I say bout John Boye, he proved again, he own the position and was just superlative! The ageless and ever dependable John Paintsil, always consistent, motivational and spiritual force of the team. His dedication to the team is unsurpassed and henceforth I will call him “Mr. Ghana”. My black star of the team was the “Magnificent” Kwadwo Asamoah-he’s smooth on the ball, almost impossible to dislodge the ball from him unless he’s fouled, quite, modest and goes about his job without any fanfare; a great ambassador for the team and country; has the potential to be as great as those before him. Oh, less I forget, congratulations to the Super Eagles! They deserve to win, their aggressive attacking style spoke volumes and everything about their attitude on the field of play says we’re going home with the trophy come rain or shine. That’s the attitude needed to triumph…………………Amen!

congo came back from 2 goals down to put us under pressure. Dauda made a terrific stop to a low shot which could have given DRC the win, Ghanaian fans started praying for the 2-2 draw. whew! games ends 2-2.
Ghana vs Mali
Ghana had few chances at goal. without a penalty converted by wakaso, the game would have been a boring draw.
Ghana vs Niger:
controversy. Niger came back to equalise, 1-1. but the referee refused their clean as a whistle goal. It would have been a whole different ball game after that. aww niger.
Ghana vs Cape verde:
Hahhahaa. outplayed, out classed. A fake penalty puts us in the lead. Cape verde attacks u from all angles, desperate fatau dauda saves gets us a win. Ghana defends desperately. finally wakaso scores from empty net. 2-nil against Cabo verde.
Ghana vs Burkina:
Well, how lucky can one team continue to be. Ghana outplayed again, outclassed, out scored, but refree decisions is giving us hope, lets pray. but no burkina will never allow coachless Ghana to win. burkina win deservedly. paul put is excited, CAF has been shamed.
Ghana vs Mali
Mali finally teaches us a lesson. Another dubious penalty goes for us, atsu drama acting prowess, god bless that boy. hurrrayy. oh no! Wakaso blast wide. well penalty is always 50/50. mali will not leave the game in the hands of the referee. they annihilate coachless ghana, a coach who has been able to frustrate good and humble players like Kwadwo asamoah and agyemang badu to look mediocre on the pitch. KASA unleashes a thunderbolt out of frustration.
AKWASI NYANTAKYI, you want to keep A.A on the job because he is GHANAMAN is good but if he is INCOMPETENT then keeping him ONLY because he is GHANAMAN is dumb.
I will wait till Ghana plays the WCQ against sudan and zambia with this apprentice in charge of our national pride and we will see but it will be TOO LATE anyways. You they will give us free passage. WE WILL DISMANTLE NYANTAKYI AND THOSE BLIND IDIOTS THEN,

we don't have quality in depth. compare the capability of nigeria's ambrose at the right full back to either afful or paintsil's output and it will tell you that we didn't have quality in depth. before a team becomes winsome, each player must be having something extra ordinary. players with something extraordinary to play like ambrose are opare and kotoko's yaw owusu and to some extent nkoom. unfrotunately, opare got injured, yaw owusu is a local and somehow nkoom has lost some spark.
afful and paintsil were just kicking the balls in or passing to their colleague whether they are being marked or not.
what the gfa must do if they still want to maintain kwesi appaih, is to bring some more quality onto the bench. can somebody tell me if maxwell konadu, saban quaye and nasamu yakubu ever played for the blackstars? nigeria had keshi and amokachi.

The problem with AA is that he had always been a local player. He was trying to make a point that local palyers are better than the well known players abroad since that has been one of his problems since his playing days. But I tell you gone are the days when Ghana can assemble a local team and dominate Africa. Somebody need to wake him up beacause he still think we are in the 70's. The team gets tired quickly beacause our local league is now a joke. Until he understands that and respect the players abroad to help him achieve success, tax payers money will be wasted. The coaches need to respect the players as well as the players respect the coaches. Sometimes we forget that we are still living in thoese dark ages when the child is always wrong and the adult is right. The players we have today have enough exposure not to be timid. And if you are coach and cannot deal with that, thats your problem. Players are not dumb that you can say things about them and expect them to be quiet. The world has changed and until our management realized it, we will always suffer defeat.

I want a local coach to lead Ghana Black Stars all the way to the World Cup, but before we do that we have to change the way we play our system. We have to play 4 5 1 formation. Because the Black Stars team doesn't have strikers, all the players are midfielders. Asamoah Gyan in general is not a striker so please Uncle Kwasi Appiah try to do something else so that we can qualify World Cup. Also, try to convince Kelvin Prince Boating, Michael Essien, Mutalli, John Mensah, Emmanuel Frimpong, Inkoom, Daniel Opare, Warriss, Addyire, Dede Ayew on the team please. This is my first eleven if you get all these players. Douada, Inkoom, Opare, Vossah, John Mensah, Frimpong, Dede Ayew, Michael Essien, Asamoah Gyan, Kelvin Prince Boating, Kwadjo Asamoah. This team can beat Spain. We have play like the way Spain play, they don't have strikers but they are best in the world. Ghana Black Stars we can do it.

Were Essien, Dede or Kevin Boateng interested in playing? We don't want the Abedi Pele and Tony Yeboh problems anymore. We need peaceful, committed and discipline players in a national team of this nature. One player's bad behavior can affect discipline and control in the whole team. We are in the team building stage. Appiah inherited a team in which, the Mensahs, Kingstons etc did not have a team. Essien did not wan't to play Ayew was showing off. No striker or left back. Think of the long term.
We came fourth when Dede Played in Gabon. We lost to Zambia when Dede played . Give us peace. It is this behavior that scare players so they refuse to play penalty or throw it away.

A Captain bring a lot of value to the team.. and the player should be able to respect and look up to him.. with his current form, gyan should not even be starting...that is not a long term issue.. AA should have been able to deal with it...i was impressed with his calling off Dede bluff but he did not handle the striker issue well.. how can some one who cannot participate in penalty kicks in a tournament be said to be the captain..Wakaso was the defacto Captain of the team.. he took all the corners, free kicks and the penalties and he conducted himself in an inspirational way...He would have taken and scored the first kick if he was playing..That is what Captain do...THE BEST PLAYER ON THE FIELD

I think the reasoning you presented in your article does not support your obvious strongly biased disapproval of the local coach. Let me cite two obvious ones:
i) You stood firmly on Sunday Oliseh's alleged comment that not selecting Michael Essien was a vital flaw? Do you seriously expect any unbiased Ghanaian to agree with you that the coach dropped Michael Essien? If Sunday Oliseh is ignorant of the reason for Essien's absence, must you support it? Some honesty on your part will give you some credibility.
ii) If you think that every administrator must personnaly write all his correspondences then I understand your article as coming from one who is ignorant about administrative practices and therefore you lack the authority to give your 'twopence worth' of comment on such an important National issue.
It may be better to simply ask for the removal of this coach without attempting to justify it, because by the logic in your article you have exposed your true motive.
The solution to the perennial failure of the Black Stars to perform well goes beyond the call to sacking this, or any other, coach. Why do I suspect that people like you are major parties to our football problems?
