Hearts recapture top - By Maurice Quansah

Accra Hearts of Oak yesterday hoisted themselves back on top of the ABC premiership with a 3-1 victory over Dwarfs at the Accra Stadium.

Before Dwarfs could settle down after recess, Amankwah Mireku fired Hearts into the lead in the 47th minute from a 30-metre freekick, which beat Dwarfs' goalie Kwaku Ofori.

However in the 63rd minute, Dwarfs' dangerman Stephen Owusu sent the stadium into graveyard silence with an equaliser, which should be in contention for the goal of the season. He received a through ball near the by-line and just when he was about to tailor a cross to his team-mates, Owusu sighted Dida off his mark and drilled home a powerful ground shot from an acute angle.

Somehow, Hearts ran out of ideas and Coach Jones Attuquayefio brought in Emmanuel Donkor for Amadu to give the team more attacking options. It took the striker little time to prove himself as a super substitute, when he restored Hearts lead by finishing a powerful Edmund Copson's deflected shot with an easy tap-in, seven minutes to time.

Five minutes later, Donkor was on hand again to put the game beyond the reach of Dwarfs, completing another move by Copson, similar to his earlier goal.

Okwawu hold Kotoko

OVER-COMPLACENCY on the part of Kumasi Asante Kotoko cost them the three maximum points in their ABC premier league match against Okwawu United at the Kumasi Stadium yesterday as they settled for a 1-1 draw.

With the new German technical head, Ernest Meddenderp directing affairs and Prince Adu Poku wearing the captain’s band for the first time since the premier league resumed, Kotoko found the net. When Shilla Alhassan broke the deadlock in the 59th minute with a beautiful goal when he glided past three defenders and placed the ball beyond the reach of Michael Aba.

Okwawu equalised through Ernest Boateng in the 73rd minute when he pounced on a loose ball after goalkeeper Samuel Quansah had failed to make a first time save.
