‘Ghanaian clubs need huge capital to thrive in Africa’

New Edubiase FC president Abdul Salam Yakubu says Ghanaian clubs need at least $1m to make meaningful impact in African club competitions.

Ghanaian clubs have failed over the years to compete favourably in both the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.

Cubs from Ghana even fail to make the group stage [Money Zone] of these competitions – often crashing out in the preliminary rounds.

New Edubiase chief, Abdul Salam Yakubu who led the club to an unsuccessful debut campaign in Africa two seasons ago, says Ghanaian clubs are unable to make impact in continental competitions due to their inferior financial status.

“Clubs in Ghana, I tell you can compete in Africa if they have the wherewithal,” he told Metro FM.

“Playing in Africa is no joke, it is very expensive.

“No wonder the North Africans dominate the competition because they have a lot of financial help from their governments.

“Ghanaian clubs can compete favourably but money is needed.

“If you want to play and compete in Africa, you’ll need at least $1m.

“Berekum Chelsea proved it with their maiden campaign with the injection of huge investment.”
