Laryea won’t give up on 2014 World Cup

He may not even be playing at all these days following his indefinite suspension by Accra Hearts of Oak and has not earned a national team call-up since his fallout with then helmsman Milovan Rajevac after he was dropped for South Africa 2010, but Laryea Kingston insists he will never rest until he plays on the highest stage of world football.

Laryea was a key member of the Black Stars which qualified Ghana for a maiden appearance at the FIFA World Cup in 2006 but a rush of blood in a group game against Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations in January that year, resulted in a red card and a consequent 4-match ban that also made it difficult for him to be included in Ghana’s maiden World Cup squad. Germany 2006 and his childhood dream of playing at the game’s biggest tournament was gone but Laryea remained unwavering and worked his way back into the team, featuring in the Africa Cup of Nations on home soil in 2008.

But after again helping with qualification, Serbian tactician Rajevac omitted Laryea from his 23-man squad for the 2010 World Cup. An angry and frustrated Laryea took the decision hard and allegedly rained some fouls words on the Serbian.

He has never been given a look again and the years keep adding up but Laryea believes he will still line up for the Ghana Black Stars on the biggest stage of them all.

“Sure, I’m still active so I’m not giving up on playing for the Black Stars again. I’ve enjoyed my career and there is only one thing left to fulfil in my career and it is to play in the World Cup and I will keep working hard and hopefully, it will come to pass,” Laryea stated.
