Election of Ghana Football Association Chairman Fixed For October 17th

Accra,(Greater Accra Region) 26, Sept. Elections for the next chairman of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) comes off on October 16 at a venue yet to be announced. Mr E.T. Mensah, Minister of Youth and Sports, who announced this at the annual Congress of the GFA at the Kingsby Hotel in Accra today, said 11 people have so far declared their intention of vying for the GFA chairmanship post left vacant by Nana Sam Brew Butler. According to Mr Mensah, following his Ministry's acceptance of Nana Butler's decision not to contest the seat for a second term, the ex-GFA chairman has until October 17 to wind up and hand over to the new executives. Nana Butler, who was nominated by the Ministry and elected GFA chairman in 1993 by Congress, completed his full four-year term today. Nana Butler, however, polled 65 votes against six by Mr T.K. Obeng, the former deputy, to become the new deputy president of Congress. And by acclamation, the former GFA chairman, who is gunning for a position on the executive council of the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF), was elevated to the chairman of the Executive Council of the GFA. The Minister thanked the out-going GFA chairman for his selfless devotion and commitment to work and wished him well in his new role.
