Hearts trounce Arsenals

Accra, Jan. 3, GNA - Defending League champions Accra Hearts of Oak trounced Berekum Arsenal 3-0 in their 13th Week Premier League game at the Ohene Djan Stadium, Accra on Sunday.

Hearts recorded the first goal in the 44th minute through Eric Gawu's header from a Hamza Abdulai's cross after the strikers had wasted several goal scoring chances in the early parts of the first half. The Phobians held on to the lead till the close of the first half and resumed the second half in a strong note in a bid to consolidate their lead. Their consistent dominance materialised for them in the 55th minute when Gawu again surged forward to apply his head to another free kick executed by Abdulai.

With a two goal comfortable lead, the Phobians never relented in their efforts to increase the goal tally and remained a constant threat in the defence of Arsenal but Mahatma Otoo, Samuel Affum and Gawu were unable to convert the chances that came their way.

They however made amends in the 80th minute, through Affum from a perfect combination between him and Gawu that saw the striker sneak pass his marker to deliver a classic goal to secure a comfortable lead for the home team.

Arsenal made several efforts to at least record a consolation goal but found the Hearts defence too difficult to penetrate leaving the score line intact till the close of proceedings and to record one of the heaviest wins for the Phobians since a long.
