Nyame Akwan Picks Shaft Fm's Gala Trophy

Obuasi July 10, GNA - Nyame Akwan Company thrashed Anglo Gold Ashanti's Malaria Control team 3-1 in the final match in a soccer gala competition held at Ofori Stadium to lift the magnificent trophy at stake.

The competition which was organized by Shaft FM, a local radio station based in Obuasi and labelled by fans as "mother of all gala competitions" because of the huge number of the participating teams, saw Nyame Akwan also taking home a set of jerseys with the Malaria Control team getting two footballs as their prize. The victory of Nyame Akwan was due to the excellent goalkeeping by Master Kojo Owusu as he pulled three dramatic saves during the penalty shoot- out after the match had ended 1-1 in regulation time. Balfos Company took the third place after they deflated Coconut Groove 5-4 in a thrilling penalty shoot-out.

The competition which was participated by 39 companies saw the National Investment Bank (NIB) adjourned the best well-behaved team with Elvis Frimpong aka Chico of Nyame Akwan grabbing the over all best player whilst Frederick Afetomashie of Malaria Control team won the best defender award.

The best goalkeeper award went to George Turkson of Balfos with Daddy Joe of Yaw Fosu Enterprise taking the golden boot prize. Ms. Victoria Owusu, General Manager of Shaft FM promised to make the gala competition an annual affair following the enthusiasm displayed by the various teams and the enthusiastic soccer fans of the Municipality.

She said the competition had been worthwhile as it afforded people who had been busy at their offices to exercise their bodies, adding that "We need to regularly exercise our bodies as human beings to ensure healthy growth and for that Shaft FM will continue to look for sponsors to organize body-exercising games in the Municipality". The News Editor of the station, Mr Albert Nana Asante commended the participating teams for the maturity they exhibited which facilitated the success of the two-day gala competition. "We cannot go without thanking our sponsors who made this event a reality", he added.
