Northern Zone Sports Festival ends at Hohoe

Hohoe, Mar 18, GNA - The Hohoe District Director of Education, Ms Juliet B. D. Kumah has said that sports continue to contribute immensely to the improvement and socio-economic development of the country. She said government was therefore laying the necessary infrastructure to encourage the people, especially the youth to take part in games. Ms Kumah said this at the closing ceremony of the 18th Inter-Schools, Northern Zone Sports Festival at the Hohoe E. P. Senior High School.

The District Director therefore called on corporate bodies and NGOs to collaborate with government towards the promotion of sports especially in the educational institutions to tap and unearth talents among the youth. Ms Kumah said the importance of sports could not be overemphasized in the development of individual and collective aspirations of the nation, besides the development of healthy physical and mental faculties in addition to its socio-economic achievement. She said "a healthy mind living in a healthy body" connotes the idea that sports develop the body, mind and soul of the individual. "Sports apart from bringing people together, further creates peace and unity among different ethnic, religious, social and political backgrounds", she said. Ms Kumah said the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports places high premium on sporting activities on the school curriculum, which spelt out modalities for balanced and holistic personality development of the individual. She entreated students to develop keen interest in sports in addition to academic work to better their lot.
