CEPS win Greater Accra Hockey Gala

Accra, Aug. 25, GNA-Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) defeated Reformers of Ghana Prison Service 5-4 on penalties, to win this year's Greater Accra Regional Hockey Gala played at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Pitch in Accra on Saturday.

The game, which was played to usher in the 2007 Hockey League, saw CEPS opening the scores through Desmond Ofori when his long shot beat goalkeeper Gideon Amegavi in the 14th minute. Reformers rallied and snatched the equalizer through Mike Aryonu in a goal-mouth melee in the 15th minute of the second half. When the penalty kick was evoked, CEPS scored four as against three by their opponents.

In the Ladies encounter, Ghana National Fire Service beat Ghana Police Service 1-0 to emerge champions while NDK Financiers also beat Citizens 2-1 to win the Seniors event.

Mr Frank Awuku, Chairman of the Greater Accra Regional Hockey Association (GAHA), praised the teams for their wonderful performances they put up and asked them to continue to strive hard and win laurels for themselves and the nation.

He said IPMC, a computer company would be now sponsoring the regional hockey league following the withdrawal of Areeba as sponsors. Mr. Awuku said the association would organise a series of training tours for the female teams as well as equipping the juveniles to enable them to develop their talents. The League kicks off in two weeks time.
