Quaye ends Barnor's unbeaten run

Accra, May 27, GNA - Nii Armah Quaye of Fit Square Gym put a halt to the unbeaten run of Featherweight "King" Joshua Barnor of Panix Gym when he landed him his first defeat during the 12th Week of the Greater Accra Amateur Boxing Association (GAABA) League last Friday night. The keenly contested bout saw Quaye, who had just returned from a championship in Benin emerge the victor through a splits decision at the expense of Barnor, gold medallist at the just ended national boxing bonanza, held at the Winneba C.K. Gyamfi Sports College.

Barnor, prior to the contest was one of the few boxers yet to lose in the 12-week old championships.

Both boxers displayed high technical and tactical abilities throughout the four rounds, but it was Quaye who did enough to win the hearts of the judges, winning on the score cards of two of the three judges.

The other featherweight clash saw Raymond Commey of Square Deal Gym defeating Joshua Addy of Attoh Quarshie Gym.

The Attoh Quarshie Gym, however, made amends in the other weight categories, with most of their boxers emerging the victors. In the welterweight division, Adotey Pappoe and Emmanuel Quarshie individually accounted for Abduramani Musah and Emmanuel Zantey of the Panix Gym and Fit Square respectively.

Evans Dodoo followed up by defeating Eric Addy of Will Power Gym in the Lightweight division, with Offei Dodoo replicating a similar deal on Akotoku Gym's Saviour Glago in the Light welterweight division. Glago however nearly marred the beauty of the night when he displayed some acts of gross indiscipline when he left the podium before the declaration of the verdict in protest against the decision by the referee to stop the bout in the closing stages of the final round. In other bouts, Emmanuel Abu of Believers Gym defeated Felix Agbozo of Ashaiman Gym in the Light welterweight division while Raymond Commey of Square Deal conquered Joshua Addy of Attoh Quarshie in the Middleweight contest.

In the light heavyweight division, Emmanuel Baffoe of Believers Gym defeated dreadlocked Gideon Osabutey of Ashaiman Gym to bring the exciting bouts to an end.
