Youth And Sports Ministry Sets Up AIDS Awareness Committee

Kumasi, (Ashanti Region) The Ministry of Youth and Sports has formed the "Youth and Sports Sector AIDS Awareness Committee" to create awareness about AIDS among the youth. This was announced by Mr E. T. Mensah, minister of youth and sports at the opening of a week-long national sports festival in Kumasi yesterday. He said the committee has drawn up a programme which is targeted specifically at the youth and the objective is to create public awareness of aids and to educate the youth about the dangers of the disease and how to prevent it. He said the committee has already started with a marathon run from Accra to Kumasi by a 20-year-old student of the National Technical Engineering College in Accra, Master Paul Asossa. Asossa started the run from Accra on September 1, and has interacted with fellow youths on the prevention of aids at Nsawam , Suhum, Kibi, Anyinam, Konongo and Ejisu. Asossa and the WBA champion, Nana Yaw Konadu, were given a standing ovation when they arrived at he Kumasi stadium during the opening ceremony of a national sports festival. The two did the lap of honour and acknowledged cheers from the teeming crowd.
