Yaaba & Zigah win Aboakyer marathon

THE maiden Aboakyer Marathon, supported by Cowbell was won by Paul Zigah and Ama Yaaba in the men and women’s divisions respectively at Winneba after a keen contest.

The marathon is part of activities planned to herald this year’s Aboakyer Festival of the chiefs and people of Winneba and a total of 320 athletes participated in the event which saw activities coming to a halt at Winneba as thousands of supporters lined up the streets and gathered at the Zion School Park to catch a glimpse of the participants and cheer their friends and relatives to victory.

The men covered a distance of 21 km starting from Gomoa Ojobi roundabout and ending at Zion School Park at Winneba, while the ladies run a distant of 18 km.

The event which is the brainchild of the Omanhene of the Effutu Traditional Area, Nana Ghartey, was given impetus by the tremendous patronage from the citizens during Olympic Day Run earlier this year.

The first winners took home ?300,000 cash each plus Cowbell products and promotional items, the second place winners received each plus Cowbell products and promotional items, the third prize winners took home ?100,000 plus Cowbell products and promotional items while the fourth to 10th prize winners in both divisions took home ?50,000 plus Cowbell products and promotional items.

According to the Communications Manager of Cowbell, Mr Festus Tettey, the company agreed to associate itself with the event because it was consistent with the company’s vision of promoting healthy living through good quality and affordable nutrition, which it provides, and the promotion of exercise through sports.

Mr Tettey said Cowbell is proud to be part of the maiden edition of the event and thanked the Effutu Traditional Council for the opportunity.

The Omanhene of the area, Nana Ghartey, on his part thanked Cowbell for responding to the appeal for support ad hoped that in future the company will put in more to make the Aboakyer Marathon an important event on the country’s sports calendar.

Nana hinted that a lot of sports talents abound in the area and challenged organisations and individuals to help tap those talents for the development of the country.
