Vice-President impressed with CAN 2000 preparations

The Vice-President, Professor John Atta Mills has commended the Department of Parks and Gardens for its excellent work in the re-grassing of the Accra Sports Stadium.

Professor Mills made the remark when he paid an unannounced visit to the stadium on Wednesday to acquaint himself with work done so far in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations, slated for Ghana and Nigeria next January. He said but for Parks and Gardens, the country would have spent 650,000 dollars to pay a South African company to do the re-grassing, adding "the money the country does not have at the moment".

Professor Mills said all that the field now needs is a lot of rolling to level the grass and also to fill the little patches on it. "The problem with the Accra stadium is that the field is over used and lacked frequent watering". He said information reaching him from Kumasi indicates that the field is in a better condition than that of Accra and work is also progressing smoothly. The Vice-President expressed the hope that everything would be completed before the commencement of the tournament, from January 22 to February 13.
