The growth of badminton in Ghana

The popularity of Badminton as a sports in Ghana is growing at a fast pace since its inception in early turn of the century.

The involvement of the youth in the sports cannot go unnoticed since many of the schools have adopted it in their sporting curriculum.

The sport which is played using the racquet to hit the shuttlecock across the net either by singles on the opposing side or by doubles.unlike the game of tennis where points are gained through when shots fired are not legitimately returned whilst in the game of badminton shot are gained striking the shuttlecock with the racquet and landing it within the opposing side’s half of the court.

The General Secretary of the Badminton Association of Ghana, Mr.Ignatius Elletey told sportscrusader.com, “the sports tremendous and steady growth can be attributed to the addition by the Ghana Education Service (GES) of badminton sports in curriculum of schools in Ghana especially in the Senior high Schools, Polytechnics and University.”

He also added that “the future of the sports in Ghana’s very bright and so far we have an outstanding player in the name of Daniel Sam who is showing great promise of making it into the Olympics .”

He emphasized how the poor infrastructure development is inhibiting the growth the sports, Nonetheless the sports in looking a good prospect in a football dominated country of Ghana.
