The 1st Ever Mountain Cycling Tour in Ghana held successfully.

The first ever mountain cycling tour was held successfully at Amedzofe in the Volta region yesterday (11/11/2011). The tour was organized by Abraerica Hospitality and Tour in partnership with the Volta Regional Cycling Association to mark the Amu (Rice) festival of the people of Avatime. Over 60 cyclists across the lengths and breath of the country were in attendance to tour sections of Akwapim to Togo ranges. The tour lasted over 7 hours and covers a distance of 30 kilometers as stoppages were made at the various tourist attraction centers’ to pay courtesy call on the chiefs and people of the area.

The undulating nature of the area posed a lot of challenge to the cyclist as some of them had to push their bikes to climb the hills’. Few minor injuries were recorded but thanks to the first aid men, those casualties were taken care of.

Mr. Gabriel Missodey, Regional Sports Executive Officer express his profound happiness as the long awaited historic tour came to a success. He thanked the chiefs and people of Avatime for their mammoth support given the tour and congratulates the cyclist for surmounting the massive challenge of riding through mountains and hills. He urged them to take cycling as a sport and not only for leisure as it is one of the well known sports in the world. The paramount chief of Avatime Osie Adzatekpor VII called on the National Sports Authority to support the initiative of promoting cycling in the area as Avatime is on its way to becoming the sports center of the Volta Region due to its mountainous nature. He disclosed that there are plans by the leadership of the area to make Avatime the carbon copy of Kenya and even make it better, where local sportsmen and women can have the chance to train sufficiently ahead of major sporting events.

The Paramount Chief appealed to the National Cycling Association to sustain the event and thank Volta Star Radio Sports Desk for the publicity given the tour, he also urge benevolent organizations and well to do individuals to help develop areas like this in the Volta Region.
