Sydney2000: Adamu whacks British gold medallist

Men's Lt Heavywt 81kg Round 1: Adamu beat FRY Courtney(Britain) on points (16-3)

African Zone Champion Charles ADAMU of Ghana caused an upset in defeating 1998 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Courtney FRY of Great Britain with a 16-3 victory in the men's Olympic light middleweight boxing preliminary bout at the Sydney Exhibition Centre Wednesday. FRY was unable to land a scoring blow against the Ghanaian fighter until well into the second round.

- "I think he deserved to win it," said Fry of Ghanaian Charles Adamu who won 16-3. "But another day he wouldn't even have been fit enough to tie my shoelaces."
- Fry, who failed to score a point in the first and third rounds and notched just one in the fourth, looked slow and even Ghana's Cuban coach Miguel Castellanos said he had expected more against a fighter he did not rank as his best.
