Stevanovic stunned at dismissal

Goran Stevanovic says he is surprised but not disappointed in the decision of the Ghana FA to relieve him of his duties as head coach of the Black Stars.

The Ghana FA, after several weeks of consultations with the Serbian trainer and other stakeholders, made public its decision on Monday.

Many have agitated for the 45-year-old’s sacking following his inability to lead Ghana to its fifth African cup triumph earlier this year in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

The Black Stars rather finished a disappointing fourth at the biennial showpiece behind Mali.

The former Partizan Belgrade coach who had one more year left to run on his 30,000 Euro a week deal however says the decision came to him as a surprise.

“In football there is a lot of stress and its unpredictable. I am more surprised, I am not disappointed,” he said.

Stevanovic, in his one year at the helm of the Black Stars won nine, drew four and tasted four defeats in his seventeen games in charge.

It is however unclear at this point the magnitude of compensation agreed upon by the two parties.

Assistant coach Akwasi Appiah has been handed temporal charge of the team until such time a substantive coach is appointed.
