Sports Authority proposes scheme for retired athletes

Wa, (U/W) July 1, GNA - The Upper West Regional Sports Authority is initiating a scheme to cater for the needs of retired athletes who have contributed to the development of the sport both the region and the nation.

Mr Iddrisu Bediaku Ahmed, the Regional Sports Development Officer announced the proposal at the launch of the Regional Unity Games at the Wa Sports Stadium on Wednesday.

He regretted that often retired athletes face financial difficulties after their career who seem to be neglected and left to their fate.

"These athletes have strived to make their Region and the nation proud and we should not forget their contributions to sports and regional unity", he stressed.

Mr Bediaku said the scheme apart from addressing some social and economic needs of the retired athletes would also enable the Sports Authority to tap on their experience as coaches and mentors for the upcoming youth.

The Regional Sports Development Officer therefore appealed to individuals, politicians and civil society organisations to support the scheme at its launch to enable it achieve its purpose.
