Southern Sector Win GHALCA Cup

Accra,(Greater Accra Region) 12 Oct. The Southern Sector select side proved their superiority over their Northern counterparts with a 3-1 win in the second leg of the special Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) fund- raising soccer match played at the Accra Sports Stadium today. Southern Sector won the the two-leg match 5-2 on aggregate, having beaten the Northerners 2-1 in the first leg played at the Kumasi Sports Stadium two weeks ago. Colonel George Brock, acting Chief Executive of the National Sports Council, presented the Blue Band trophy, donated by Lever Brothers (Ghana) Limited to skipper Eben Dida. Striker Osei Kuffour (sixth minute), substitute Awuley Quaye Jr. and Godwin Arthur Tay scored for the Southerners in the 75th and 82nd minutes respectively while top marks man Akwasi Kyere, netted the only goal for the Northern Sector.

After Colonel Brock had inspected the two teams, the Northerners kicked off but it was the Southerners who took control over the game and wasted a first minute chance. Kuffour opened the scoring in the sixth minute when he dived to tap-in overlapping right full back Fuseini Adams' shot across the penalty area. Their 1-0 lead lasted for seven minutes as Kyere equalised for the Southern Sector with a tricky shot outside the penalty area. The two sides wasted a lot of goal scoring chances to the surprise of the sparse crowd. The two teams resumed the second half with fresh limps to strengthen their attacking machinery. The changes benefited the Southerners as substitutes Awuley Quaye and Tay, who both came on in the 68th minute for left winger Johnson Eklu and inside left Kennedy Ampomah, scored a goal each. Barely seven minutes after the substitution, Quaye converted a free kick just behind the box. In the 82nd minute, Tay completed the rout with a long volley that beat goalkeeper Constant Mante.
