SWAG Executive members calls on LOC

Accra, Jan 16, GNA - The newly sworn-in executive officers of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) on Tuesday paid a courtesy call on the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of Ghana CAN 2008. The visit is in recognition of the LOC, by the SWAG as a strategic partner in sports development especially in the run up to the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted by Ghana.

Mr Ackah Anthony, President of SWAG said the visit is also aimed at finding common grounds for both bodies to collaborate for the successful hosting of the tournament.

Briefing the newly elected officers, Mr Magnus Rex Danquah, Chief Operating Officer of the LOC said his outfit's programme is on course and they will be fully prepared before commencement of the tournament. The Operating Officer said the Committee has a time table for delivery and all projects designed for the competition will meet the required deadline.

Mr Rex Danquah gave the assurance that the LOC will link up with SWAG to find ways of building capacity of sports reporters before the competition.

According to Mr Danquah, international tournaments have assumed different dimensions hence the need to update knowledge of reporters to acquaint themselves with the new developments.

He added that SWAG will be expected to play an anchor role in handling the international media who will visit the country to cover the competition as well as assist in the management of the media centers at the various stadia.

Mr Anthony assured the SWAG of the Association's unflinching support in the run up to the competition to ensure a successful event, which will keep fond memories in the minds of the international media and soccer fans.

The newly sworn-in officers were also taken through an hour and half tour of the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium, Accra by officials of the LOC. The visit is to brief the Association on the progress of work so far undertaken by the contractors for the rehabilitation of the stadium. Mr Anthony expressed satisfaction with work at the stadium, saying that contrary to fears that the project might not complete in due time, the Association is now convinced that the stadium will be ready in time for the competition.

The executive members are expected to make similar visits to other venues slated to host the CAN 2008 tournament.
