Over 38 sports personalities honored

Western Prime Communication Limited on Friday conferred awards on 38 sportsmen and women, corporate bodies, individuals and radio sports presenters for their performance in 2011 at its second Western Region Sports Awards ceremony at Takoradi.

Fatao Alhassan, a Taekwondo athlete picked the Sports Personality of the Year award while Jacob Appau Asiedu of Medeama Football Club received the Footballer of the Year award.

Miss Janet Egyir of Hasmal Ladies Club was adjudged the Female Footballer of the Year with the Regional Taekwondo Team, as the team of the Year.

Mr. Ekow Essilfie of Takoradi-based Melody FM, received the Radio Presenter of the Year Award while the Radio Station of the Year Award went to Melody FM.

Nana Awulae Attibrukusu III, President of the Western Region House of Chiefs, in a speech called on the people to come together irrespective of their ethnic backgrounds to develop sports in the Region.

He said Sports is a business, and the Region would move forward in development when Sports was developed.

He regretted that the Region was lagging behind in sports and so all hands should be on deck to reverse the situation.

“Let us stand up and speak with one voice to support sports education and development”, he said.

Mr. Albert Ababio, Corporate Affairs Manager of West Prime Communications Limited, was not happy about the lack of training facilities for lesser known sports such as Taekwondo and badminton in the Region.

He appealed to the government and corporate bodies to assist to address the problem.

Mr. Ababio said for the second successive year, no tennis player has been honoured because the sport does not have structured championship in the Region.

He said the company has discussed the issue with the National Tennis Association and is ready to collaborate with any corporate body for the organization of an annual championship in the Region.
