Organisers of national sports festival meet in Bolgatanga

Bolgatanga (Upper East), 6th July 99 -

Stakeholders charged with organising this year's inter-schools national sports festival scheduled for August in the Upper East Region, have met in Bolgatanga to review their plans.

They include the regional administration, regional and district directors of education, sports organisers, heads of institutions, and the security services.

Opening the meeting, the regional director of education Mr Oduro Agyepong, spelt out the role each department was expected to play to ensure the success of the festival.

He said this was important to project the image of the region. Mr Agyepong appealed to contractors who have been awarded contracts to renovate dormitories at the Bolgatanga Secondary School (Big Boss) and the Bolgatanga Girls Secondary School to complete them before the end of July.

The heads of Bolgatanga Girls Secondary and Big Boss complained of shortage of gas for cooking as well as the high cost of electricity, and appealed to the sports authorities to intervene before the festival begins.

The meeting called on school authorities to issue each student with an identity card, and also conduct searches for drugs and weapons in the dormitories in view of the proliferation of weapons on campuses in recent times.
