Olympic Committee's elections slated for October

Accra, Sept. 15, GNA - The much-expected Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) Congress may see the light of day by the end of October or November.

The schedule for the Congress, which will see the election of new executives to steer the affairs of the Committee, has remained a daydream due to the impasse currently engulfing the GOC.

The stand-off in the GOC came about following the June 30, 2009, General Assembly which saw the election of Professor Francis Dodoo as President of the Committee.

The diplomatic brouhaha has compelled the Conference of Elected National Sports Associations of Ghana to set up a Mediation Committee to resolve the issue.

Sam Pee Yalley, Chairman of the Committee told a press briefing on Wednesday that they have set a deadline of October or November for the organisation of the General Assembly.

He said the 16 National Sports Associations affiliated to the National Sports Council (NSC) have 'democratically' conducted congresses to elect their Executives in accordance with the roadmap concluded by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) envoy that visited the country last year.

Yalley who is also the Vice Chairman of the Ghana Tennis Association said elected Executives at the last Congress have been dissolved to set the stage for new elections.

He expressed disgust at the negative trend that the impasse is having on the promotion of Ghana sports and has assured they will go the extreme to restore peace.

"Enough is enough. Ghana must be the winner not an individual, his ego or pride."

Yalley warned that his outfit will take legal measures to ensure that the due process is followed to the core.

Benson Tongo Baba, the incumbent boss has led the GOC for close to 14 years.
