National Sports Authority plans to lift Disabled Sports

Maputo, Mozambique, Sept. 16, GNA - Director-General of the National Sports Authority, (NSA) Worlanyo Agra, has said his outfit will devote further attention towards the development of Disabled Sports in the country in order to unearth more talents for international events.

Agra told the GNA Sports in Maputo that the performance of the disabled Athletes at the 10th All Africa Games, (AAG) was enough conviction for the sport to given adequate resources to develop.

The Director-General said the Chairman of the Disabled Sports Association was recently in London to attend a seminar aimed at promoting the sports among its members in Ghana adding that the Authority has thus put in place plans to support the effort to encourage and develop the sport among the disabled.

He said that efforts will be made at giving them more competitions on both the local and international scenes and to encourage members to undertake viable vocations to develop their talents and earn a livelihood.

Agra said the move will ensure adequate preparations for the athletes ahead of future events, since they have demonstrated beyond all doubts that they have what it takes to give the country more medals on the international scene.

He said the NSA will liaise with the Association to identify competitions that will give them the opportunity to seek qualification to the Olympics and other events.

"They will definitely be supported to participate in the Olympic Games and other international feats because they are our medal hopefuls".

Ghana had her first gold medal in Disabled Sports when Ajara Mohammed won the Women's 1500 meters event, and later added another gold in the 400 meters race.

Anita Fodjour and Patrick Obeng also won bronze medals respectively in the Women and Men 1500 meters while Felix Acheampong won a silver medal in the same race to give a boost to their call for the due recognition.

The achievement of the disabled sports men and women has helped Ghana to make a total medal haul of 13, with the Disabled Athletes providing five of them, hence the call for more support to enable them win laurels for the country.
