Mighty Zambia Pip Oly

Accra, (Greater Accra) 5 Nov. The Zambian national team, Mighty Zambia, beat Accra Great Olympics 1-0 in an international friendly match played at the Accra sports stadium today. An own goal by Oly's right full back Dan Quaye in the 59th minute was enough for the visitors to carry the day. The Zambians, parading almost the same squad that beat Ghana's senior national team, the Black Stars, for the third place in last year's nations' cup in South Africa, were matched boot for boot by the young lads of Oly. The Zambians, however, dominated the second half with a series of onslaughts, but were denied a goal until the 59th minute. Substitute Musole Sakulanda, who came on for right winger Kabamba Kalande in the 55th minute, gave a nice cross into the goal area, and Quaye, in an attempt to prevent the ball from entering the posts, scored an own goal.. Oly mounted a last minute pressure in a bid to redeem the only goal. But substitute Joshua Amui Quaye, who also came on for inside left Laryea Kingston (55th minute) missed an 89th minute golden opportunity, when he shot off target with only goalkeeper Davies Phiri to beat, after beating an off-side trap. The Zambians will play Accra Hearts of Oak on Sunday, November nine, at the same venue. The matches form part of Zambia's preparations towards next year's African Cup of Nations in Burkina Faso. Speaking to the GNA later, coach Burkhard Ziese, a former coach of the Black Stars and now with Mighty Zambia , said he has made a proposal to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for his team to play the Black Stars on November 30 in Accra. He hopes the match, if honoured by the Stars, will be a good test for the two teams. The Zambians leave the country on Tuesday, November 11.
