Massive Thrills At Kumasi Stage Of Cowbell National Cycling Tour

The 7th stage of the 2011 Cowbell National Cycling Tour of Ghana was held in the garden city of Kumasi on Thursday with the race experiencing the most exciting atmosphere so far.

The race, which ran a circuit spanning a 1.4 km stretch from the Asafo interchange began with a total of 73 riders. Kumasi-based cyclist Adbdul Razak Abdulmumuni took a commanding lead early in the race opening a gap of 1 min 45 secs from the rest of the pack.

By the 18th lap, the race began to heat up as the bunch began to catch up with the breakaway Abdulmumuni. The already charged crowd that had lined the entire circuit to cheer the cyclists began to sense that the race would end with a photo finish as the bunch was catching up.

The race went into its final four laps with the bunch having caught up with the breakaway leader pushing the race into a photo finish that proved to be an intense rush for both the cyclists and the crowd gathered.

At the end of the 30-lap 84km race, Kojo Baffour of Victory Club came first followed by Aminu Mohammed and William Nartey of River Park and H.M. respectively.

The Yellow Jersey which goes to the best rider by time went to Henry Djangmah of Die Hard Club for the fourth time in the tour with the Green and Red jerseys going to Samuel Anim and Abdul Razak Abdulmumuni respectively.

The tour moves on to the Eastern region where the riders race on Friday morning in Koforidua and again in the afternoon through Adowso, Mamfe, Adukrom, Nkurakan and back to Koforidua.

The tour has lost two riders thus far to some minor injuries. Five other riders have dropped out as a result of not meeting the minimum riding speed.

The tour ends in Accra in the grand finale on Saturday 9th April, 2011 afternoon at the Trade Fair Center, La.
