KN Owusu Hockey Tournament : Ashanti Dominate

Ashanti Region dominated their match against Eastern winning 3-1 to place second in Pool A. The victory means Ashanti play the runner-up in Pool B for the 3rd and 4th places of this tournament on Saturday morning.

The game was played on a very competitive note with each team displaying some good stick work and tactical play. Ashanti proved the superior side when it came to goal scoring putting 3 past the Eastern goalie through Daniel Ashitey (27th) and Maxwell Aerbeh (50th and 63rd). Captain Samuel Yirenkyi responded for Eastern with a goal in the 60th minute from a penalty corner.

In the second match of the day, Brong Ahafo put up an impressive showing in the first half but conceded a goal from one of the numerous raids of the much fancied Greater Accra I team. The scoreline at half time was a not a true reflection of proceedings and Brong Ahafo were just unlucky to concede a goal in the 22nd minute from a Leslie Barnor’s connection after Elikem Akaba had made light work of the defense network. The Accra boys were still unimpressive throughout the second half but managed to score 2 goals to increase their tally to 3. Brong Ahafo continued to impress with their brilliant play and in the process pulled one goal back just on the stroke of full time from the stick of Kwadwo Kyere.

The tournament enters the final day on Saturday with 2 play-off matches in the morning and the grand final in the afternoon. At 7:00am, Eastern battle Central to determine the 5th and 6th places while Ashanti take on Brong Ahafo at 9:00am to determine the 3rd and 4th place teams. In the grand final, Greater Accra I and Greater Accra II will vie for honours at 3:30pm after two curtain raisers involving 2 female teams and the oldies - Citizens, Veterans and Multistix.
