Ivorian Wins Accra Open Golf Tourney

Ivorian Ernest Koffi scored 144 gross to win this year's 47th annual Accra Open Golf Championship played at the Achimota Golf course in Accra at the weekend. He was followed by Paul Korsah who won on countback against E.M. Kwame after both had scored 148 gross while Samuel Harvey took the fourth position with 149 gross. In the Ladies event, Mona Captan retained the trophy for the sixth time running when she scored 157 gross to top a field of 30 lady golfers. Golf whizkid, Grace Komladzei took the second position with 160 gross, Florence Etwi-Barimah, third with 166 gross and Grace Quartey was fourth with 171 gross. In the Ladies handicap, Won Kim and Adelaide Owusu Agyepong snatched the two prizes at stake when they scored 138 net and 144 net for the first and second positions respectively. Emos Korblah won the Professionals event with 207 gross, Baba Akologo followed with 217 gross while Victor Brave-Mensah and M. Dauda tied for the third position with 218 gross score. The three-day event, sponsored by BCM (Ghana) Limited, a Building Construction and Mining company, attracted over 240 golfers from Ghana, Togo, Benin, Cote D'Ivoire, Nigeria and Niger. In an address, Mr. Justice D. F. Annan, Speaker of Parliament, who was the guest of honour, called on other organisations to sponsor not rpt not only golf but also sports in general to unearth talents. Mr. Dennis Gilhard, Managing director of BCM gave the assurance that his company would sponsor the competition next year. Among those present were Dr. Kwabena Adjei, Minister of Food and Agriculture, Prof. P. Addy, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports and Nana Wereko Ampem the second, President of the club who appealed to the Ministry of Youth and Sports to help develop golf.
