Ga East wins Greater Accra Sports Festival

Dodowa (GAR), July 1, GNA - Ga East District defeated Dangme West District 2-1 in the finals to win the soccer trophy of this year's Greater Accra Regional Sports Festival which ended at Dodowa in the Dangme West District on Saturday.

The game, which started on a fast note, saw the champions making several incursions into the vital area of their opponents. The efforts of Ga District were rewarded when Carlos Ohene and Yaw Bernard scored two early goals in the 20th and 26th minutes respectively.

Dangme West rallied back soon after the two goals and managed to score in the 35th minute through Alhassan Mohammed. Inspired by the goal, the Dangme West lads threw everything into the game in the second half but failed to score again as the defenders of Ga East held them in check.

Accra Metropolitan Assembly thrashed Ga West 4-0 to take the third position in a match full of action. In the athletics 400 metres event Ishmael Marfo, Richlove Glah and Lovelace Marmattah, all of the Accra Metro placed first, second and third respectively.

Mr Samuel Steve Atuahene, Greater Accra Regional Sports Development Officer, commended the participants for the sportsmanship exhibited throughout the Games while urging them to keep it up. He said next year handball and boxing would be included to the Games to be competed by all the Districts.

Ga East, Ga West, Dangme East, Dangme West, Accra Metro and Tema Municipal District took part in the three-day festival of soccer, volleyball, athletics, netball and table tennis.
