The family of the late Ghanaian football legend, Awuley Quaye Sr., accompanied by officials from the Ghana Football Association (GFA), met with the Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, to seek government support for his funeral.

The meeting took place at the minister's office on Tuesday, April 30, 2024.

During the visit, the minister assured the family and the football community that the government, in collaboration with the GFA, is committed to ensuring that the former national team captain is honoured with a fitting burial.

"The government will do everything within its power to ensure that our father, our legend, is laid to rest with the dignity he deserves," said Mustapha Ussif.

Reflecting on Quaye's legacy, the minister added, "In 1978, many of us were yet to be born, but Awuley Quaye had already made his mark in football. It is only right that we give him a befitting funeral. I am confident that the president, a known football fan, will be keen to support this cause."

Awuley Quaye Sr., renowned for captaining the Black Stars to their third African Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory in 1978, passed away on Monday, March 25, 2024.

His contribution to Ghanaian football was immense, not only as a player but also as a father to Abdullah Quaye and Lawrence Quaye, also known as Junior, who both pursued football careers.

The delegation that called on the minister included GFA Executive Committee Member Oduro Sarfo, members of Quaye's family, and sports journalist Dan Kwaku Yeboah.

The visit also served to officially inform the minister of Quaye's passing and to extend an invitation to the ministry for the upcoming funeral ceremonies.

The funeral is slated for June 8, 2024, at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra.
