Edem wins Accra Squash Championship

Accra, Sept. 29, GNA - Edem Yaw of the Tesano Squash Club out served and defeated team-mate, Joe Adone 3-0 in the finals to win the First Accra Open Squash Championship played at the Tesano Sports Club at Tesano in Accra on Sunday.

Edem who took his opponent by storm with dangerous services, scored 15-8, 15-6 and 15-4 to clinch victory in the keenly contested game. On the way to the finals, Edem edged out Yaw Dadzi of Tema Squash Club 15-4, 15-3 and 15-8 while Adone also beat Victor Ablevi of Ghana Cocoa Board 17-15, 15-11 and 15-5 in a close contest. Abeiku Bentil of Enterprise Insurance Company Limited also beat team-mate, George Lartey 15-13, 15-11 and 15-10 to win the Seniors event.

Edem had 150 Ghana Cedis while the runner-up received 100 Ghana Cedis as their prizes.

Mrs Priscilla Owusu-Sarpong, Secretary General of the Ghana Squash Association appealed to the National Sports Council to assist the Association with the needed infrastructure to enable it carry out its developmental projects.

She also appealed to corporate bodies, individuals and institutions to come to the aid of the Association to enable it to revamp the sport especially at the youth which she said was dying out due to lack of support and interest. 29 Sept. 08
