'Boxing has achievements than football in Ghana'

Moses Foh-Amoaning, who was a member of the Commission of Inquiry into matters relating to the Black Stars participation in Brazil 2014 World Cup, has stirred controversy by rating boxing ahead of football when it comes to Ghana’s achievement in sports.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) broke their silence this week about the work of the Commission of Inquiry, indicating that it targeted some individuals and that the Commission failed to do a good work.

However, Foh-Amoaning believes their job put the supreme interest of Ghana sports at hearts and didn’t witch-hunt any individual or group of individuals, adding that he doesn’t envy the seat of the GFA president one bit, because he was once the President of a sporting discipline which has achieved more than football.

“One thing is that if they want to appeal they can appeal, but no one should malign us. Some of their comments are unfortunate, but we want to listen to everything they have said on radio and respond appropriately.

“If I put my reputation down very few people at the FA will match it. I am not jealous of the GFA presidency, because I once occupied it when I was the president of GBA

“The Ghana Boxing Association has more achievements than football in this country. We have Azumah Nelson. They should bring any footballer in the country who can match his achievements. We can have this debate and put things at their right perspectives,” he told Atinka FM.

Ghana boxing has produced the likes of Azumah Nelson who is rated as the greatest boxer of all-time in Africa, Ike Quartey, D.K Poison, Joseph Agbeko, Joshua Clottey, Nana Yaw Konadu, etc.

While football which is the passion of nation has also brought Ghana a lot of honours: the senior national team of Ghana, Black Stars are 4 times Africa Cup of Nations and have secured three FIFA World Cup qualifications, reaching the quarter finals in 2010, equaling the feat of Cameroon and Senegal in 1990 and 2002 as the best performance by Africa in the mundial.

Black Starlets, the U-17 national team of Ghana have two world titles, while Black Satellites are the only African team to win gold in the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Football in Ghana has produced legends like Abedi Pele Ayew, the first player to win the African Footballer of the year on three consecutive occasions, Tony Yeboah, the first African to win the top scorer in the Bundesliga, Samuel Osei Kuffour, arguably the greatest defender Africa has ever seen, Michael Essien, Stephen Appiah, Osei Kofi, Wilberforce Mfum, etc.
