Assembly to promote sports development in schools

Obuasi, May 5, GNA - The Obuasi Municipal Assembly has said that is poised at complimenting government's efforts at enhancing sports development in education institutions and communities.

Mr John Alexander Ackon, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) who announced this at the official opening of this year's Ashanti Regional Basic Schools Inter-District U-12 and U-15 Sports Festival at Obuasi, stressed that "the Assembly has a responsibility to play in promoting sporting activities in the Schools".

Emphasizing the importance of sports, the MCE said it is one area the nation could rely on to instil a high sense of discipline and a healthy lifestyles among the youth.

Mr Ackon therefore called for support from organizations and individuals to help the Ghana Education Service carry out its sports development programmes to achieve the needed results. The MCE noted that the Festival would not only help in unearthing talents, but will be a forum to enable the sports boys and girls to socialize and learn to tolerate each others views.

He advised the officiating officials to display a sense of honesty and moral discipline on the filed of play to ensure the success of the Festival. Mr Edward Ennin, Member of Parliament for Obuasi in a speech read on his behalf, said he would focus on youth development through organising sporting activities.
