Army Inter-Command games enters fifth day

The Army Inter-Command/ Formation Sports competition kicked off on Monday at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.

The theme for the five-day competition is “Strengthening Team work, Friendship and Esprit De Corps through Sports.”

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the competition, Chief of Army Staff, Major General R.K Opoku-Adusei, said the Ghana Army used to be one of the most strongest outfits in Africa as far as sports was concerned and therefore the army has to restore back the glory that their predecessors won for the country.

“Lt. Robert Quartey, Mike Quaye, Joe Gartey, are all award winners in sports competition that came from the Ghana Army.”

He went on to urge the sports men and women who are taking part in the competition to put a highly spirited display to insure professionalism, gender equality behaviours in the games as well as breaking lots of record in order to be selected to represent their command in the upcoming Ghana Inter-Army sports competition.

“I want to also urge the officials of this special event to officiate very fairly because poor officiating brings about misunderstanding between competitors and the officials themselves,” he added.

Major-General Opoku-Adusei also commended the Command Support Services Brigade for organising such a competition in other to promote sports in the Ghana Army, after which he took the first salvo as well as lighting the Olympic flame to officially signify the commencement of the competition.

The opening ceremony saw dignitaries such as former Army Chief of Staff, Major-General C.N.B Yaache as the Guest of Honour, Brigadier General S.K Adeti, GOC Southern Command, Brigadier General J.A Boampong, GOC Central Command, Brigadier General Musa Whajah, Commander Support Services Brigade and Brigadier General AK Boimah, Commander ATRAC.

The sportsmen of women from the Support Services Brigade, Southern Command, Northern and Central Command making one team and the Army TRG Command-Non Scoring are to compete in the various events such as football, basketball, volleyball, handball, tennis, athletics, table-tennis, cross country, tug-of-war and swimming.

The competition, which ends on Friday, would be held at both the El-wak Sports Stadium and the Nicholson Stadia, in the Burma Camp.
