Ankrah to go back to radio

Seasoned broadcast journalist Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has given the biggest indication yet that he could be back behind the microphone very soon. However, it is not on the television screens as most people would be expecting.

The former Sunshine Radio, Choice FM, Joy FM and BBC sports presenter dropped the hint in an exclusive interview with Ghana’s leading football website ghanacoccernet.com recently. “Radio is my first love. Radio opened the gateway to my broadcasting career and took me places l only dreamt of so yes, l owe radio an awful lot.”

Currently in the books of South Africa based Supersport as an Anchor presenter, Ampofo Ankrah insists he still has a lot to learn in the broadcasting media industry and would love to try his hands at areas not directly related to sports. “The beauty about radio is that it is a never ending learning curve and l will be hoping to shift away from my traditional sports presentation to try something new”.

As to whether or not he will find the time and attention for full time radio is another issue but there is no doubt that wherever he finds himself, listeners will be captivated by the style of presentation.

On the subject of politics, Ampofo Ankrah said he is not surprised that so many presenters are stepping into the political arena but offered some advice to his colleagues who have taken that bold step. “I can mention Alhassan Suhini and Kojo Oppong Nkrumah because l know both personally. These are two fine young men who can bring a lot to the table if they are in parliament. l hope it goes well for them because we need more good people that the youth can look up to as political role models”.

On his own political ambitions Ampofo Ankrah dismissed any such notion. “Not now and not any time soon. l have a different agenda and assignment with the youth so maybe in future but certainly not now”.

He paid tribute to the late Komla Dumor whom he described as the ultimate radio presenter with a natural flair for communicating. He also praised the consistency and quality of Kwame Sefa Kaye of Peace FM, Doreen Andoh of Joy FM, Jessica Saforo and Bernard Avle of Citi FM. “There are others who are also doing a tremendous job especially the twi presenters who changing the landscape of radio broadcasting”.

Ampofo Ankrah said he hopes the current GFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi would seriously consider going for the topmost seat in African football and start his groundwork now because there are going to be major changes in global and local football over the next few months. “l have said on a number of occasions that massive change is coming and only those who are prepared will occupy the enviable positions”.
