Andam and Twum's withdrawal confirmed

The National Sports Council (NSC) confirmed on Friday that two of Ghana's medal hopefuls, Kenneth Andam and Monica Twum have withdrawn from competing in the forth-coming Commonwealth games in Manchester later in the month.

Consequently, the (NSC) in consultation with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and the Ghana Athletics Association has cancelled Ghana's participation in both the men and women relay events.

A statement issued in Accra on Friday and signed by Dr Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah, Acting Chief of NSC said both athletes complained of fitness. The fortunes of the nation hangs on Aziz Zakari and Christian Nsiah in the 100 and 200 metres while Andrew Owusu would compete in the triple jump.

According to the final list, Margaret Simpson vies for honours in the heptathlon event while Vida Anim in the 100 and 200 metres women event. U.S-based Ghanaian weightlifter Naa Amorkor Ollenu King, ranked third in the States arrived in Accra to join his colleagues in camp, the statement said.
