32nd Onetouch SWAG Awards Launched

Accra, August 2, GNA - The 32nd Awards Night of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has been launched in Accra on Thursday. The awards, the flagship of the sports media fraternity is dubbed " 2007 Onetouch SWAG Awards Night."

The ceremony, which seeks to reward outstanding sports personalities during the previous year, has been tentatively fixed for September 1, at the Banquet Hall of the State House.

The event is being sponsored by the national cellular outfit, Onetouch to the tune of GH=A230,000 (=A2300 million Cedis). Ackah Anthony, President of SWAG at the launch, attributed the delay in organising the event to inadequate and willing sponsors and therefore lauded the national telecommunication outfit for coming to their aid.

He explained that the financial commitment of Onetouch was thrice their first attempt in 2004 that subsequently earned them as the title sponsors.

Mr Philip Sowah, Chief Officer of Onetouch said his company's resolve to sponsor the event was part of their commitment to the development of sports in the country.

He said the support for the event was a climax to tremendous support for sporting activities during the year.

Mr Sowah pledged future support to the annual awards in the company's quest to make it more attractive and appealing. He said that it is gratifying that sports fans have been involved with the creation of a text pool to select the winner of the topmost categories of awards such as the 'Sports Personality' and 'Footballer of the Year' awards.

"Fans have the option of texting SP1 for Stephen Appiah, SP2 for John Mensah, SP3 for Ignatius Gaisah to Onetouch 1914 for the 'Sports Personality' Category.

"In the same form P1 can be texted for Michael Essien, P2 for Stephen Appiah and P3 for John Mensah to Onetouch 1915 for the 'Footballer of the Year' award."

For the first time in the history of the event, the ceremony will be beamed live across the country and to other parts of the world by courtesy of Metropolitan Television (Metro TV).
