The prisons are always abandoned. Even comments from readers on this subject are not coming in. Why? Because no one is interested. But that is the hypocrisy of the Ghanaian community for us. Prisoners are human beings like any one else. They are our own kith and kin. Some of us family members are the ones who pushed them into their crimes.The prisons are part of our society and deserve equal attention like any other sector. Government and leadership of the country must do a lot to improve prison conditions. But it is not only prisons that are overcrowded. Living accommodation for prison officers all over Ghana is even worse and a whole nightmare. Sometimes you even wonder who actually is the prisoner and whether choosing to work to take care of prisoners should deny you of your own rights to a good working environment. It is indeed a pain to be a prison officer in Ghana. Staff welfare is low - their accommodation is poor, small in size and with washrooms inadequate and located miles away from bedrooms. There is lack of adequate training opportunities and staff are demotivated. All because Governments all these years have not put in enough resources. They care more about the police and military.
