Learn to trust multinational companies from a distance. It is all about the money. Once you are down, you become desolate to them.
Don't just sign documents or contracts without reading the small prints.

I do empathize with the guy but the question is, is it Baker Hughes' responsibility? He may be entitled to workmen's compensation since it sounds like he got hurt while on the job and ought to go claim it. Has he contacted the insurance company for the vehicle for compensation? Or was vehicle not insured and if not then he can sue the owner, which is Baker Hughes for compensation. Did he sign up for short or long term disability insurance or health insurance. Disability and health insurance are optional and the company you work for usually opts to pay part of the premium for you, otherwise full payment comes from your pay check. Basically, it depends on your contract and what you signed up for.
What is sad is our poor medical care in Ghana, most folks in such serious accidents in Ghana, usually die -- most foreigners/expats would have been flown to their countries for further care but I guess he was sent to SA for better treatment.
You work for a company and get compensated for your productivity, it is up to you the individual to insure yourself or save for a rainy day, unfortunately that is how it works in a capitalist society. By the way, where is his family in all this?
On another note, have the victims of GOIL disaster during the flooding been compensated by GOIL and if so how much did each receive?

"Workers' compensation is a form of insurance providing wage replacement and medical benefits to employees injured in the course of employment in exchange for mandatory relinquishment of the employee's right to sue his or her employer for the tort of negligence".
What is so complicated to understand about workmen's comp? If he got injured while doing work for the company (using company car, indicates he was doing some company business at time of accident) -- then he could claim workmen's comp or can sue for compensation, if company is found negligent. These are just suggestions based on content of the article, I don't know any more than I read.
Unfortunately, there are guidelines and policies when you work for a company and it is in the interest of the employee to apprise themselves of the policies. If he is incapacitated to the point where he cannot follow up on some of these compensations due him then his family need to step in.

He was driving irresponsibly and wrecked a company truck. He should be fired. He has cost the company enough with the repairs to truck, insurance cost increase, paperwork, time. It is bad what happened to him, but not Baker's fault. They already have paid his disability. They owe him nothing. When are you black people gonna ever learn, NO ONE OWES YOU ANYTHING! Your lives are no more important than anyone elses. Everyone's life matters! I suggest all drive a company vehicle carefully, be glad you have a job, be glad the company is giving you a truck to drive, and treat it with care. When you wreck it, apologize and pay for the damages out of your check. Baker hughes owes this man nothing more.
