So Ghana has finally gotten off its fucking lazy ass and begun a campaign against shitting in the open. Or has it? Nothing in this ignorant story mentions a single thing that the GoG has recently begun to do, or is about to do, to combat this foul practice. The story merely mentions already well-known statistics and the lack of interest by government. So, where is the story, or the paragraph, or even the single sentence informing us of the nature of the campaign that Ghana has begun? Go back to journalism school...or better yet, go push a truck through the streets of Accra.

The one and only campaign against open defaecation is constructing enough latrines for each and every community.
Fact is: no person would go to the nearby bush or open space to defaecate when they have a proper place to do the same.
Therefore mere words, announcement etc cannot solve the problem because as long as people do not have toilets to use, they will use the open space.
I remember in the youthfuldays, we would have to do a lot of searching, some times walking all the way from Kokompe (now Kantamanto) to either Klu-Town or Salaga Market, (behind Wato-Cafe) or Tudu just to look for a place to go to toilet. If we had running stomachs we were sure to release the stuff behind any build we saw. Even then we had to carry along two empty tins of milk, so we could stand on them because faeces was at every imaginable square inch!
Till date, I have wild dreams about such horror scenes!

I am glad to have the opportunity to read your article THE PRACTICE OF OPEN DEFECATION in Ghana. The article commented that one of the reasons for such a shameful behaviour is lack of private sector to invest in providing descent toilet facilities since government cannot do it all.
I comment by writing that the private sector has tried to help but it is the government which is not helping in such an important issue. Five years ago, Iwrote a bussiness proposal to build PUBLIC REST ROOMS (TOILETS AND BATH ROOMs) at stratigic areas at Accra and expand to the big cities with photographs of the proposed projects to the then President, Mills and the Minister of Health by then. Until now I have not heard a word from any body. I have not abandoned the idea. I am a Ghanaian living in USA for the past 30 years. I am retiring from work this year. I have invested in housing projects in Ghana and I wish the writer can help me to see people in authority to find good locations for me to start the investment. I am a manager by profession. I graduated from University of Ghana, and MBA from west texas state university, USA
