I saw many people talking delivery of used and soiled mattresses from abroad and taking them away out of the Tema harbor. Knowing that this was not correct, I casually asked my clearing agent what was going on as regards used mattresses. To this, the agent responded that there is a discretion clause which meant that some used mattresses can be allowed to pass customs check. He continued that this was however being abused and the exchange of a few Cedis under the table will instantly transform used mattresses into virtually new used mattresses.
He even encouraged me to go into the importation of used mattress business as it was now a very lucrative business.
Secondly I dont understand how it will cost GHC50,000 to destroy 2000 used and useless mattresses. My over-riding suspicion also is that the mattresses do not even number up to 2000

Hospitals in the US don't discard their mattresses because it has been used by patients with infectious diseases . The hospital cleans and disinfect them and reuse. There is no disease in the US where because of it a single mattress had to be thrown out in a hospital. Name it, from TB, MRSA, Ecoli, C-Diff, HIV, Aids, HepC, Meningitis, etc, etc. The only exception will be Ebola which is basically endemic. Woke up Ghana. It's so sad this government is dump.
