How do you ban the use of charcoal when there is always shortage of LPG, and even if there is, it is not affordable to the ordinary person? What is the minimum wage now? Compare that with how much LPG costs. When some party gurus are given contracts to plant trees, nothing is planted yet the money is paid in full. That is what you get when you put squared pegs in round holes. Even if the people do not use the trees for charcoal, they shall use them for firewood. Ask the deputy minister how he expects people to cook and feed their family. Mahama has disappointed many of us but some people see nothing wrong with his failures.

People use the Charcoal to cook BECAUSE there's NO ALTERNATIVE.We all NOW know the NECESSITY of vegetation around us but WHERE ARE THE POLICIES TAKING THIS INTO ACCOUNT ?? Too often there's this "adhoc behaviour" in politics....without thinking FIRST!!!

Frank, read the article very well into details.
The proposed ban is on commercial production. However, we cannot deplete our tress and forest for charcoal, that is common sense.

It can be Common Salt. Note that at the North, that is a main source of employment for many women. Not every family has got Dawadawa and shea butter trees. Those who have them burn them into charcoal so they can get employment and those who do not have them have to buy so they can also cook for their families. Is this Rocket Science difficult to understand? How many times do the people of the North LPG and is it affordable to them? Go live among them as I did and see the ordeal they go through to cook for their food. We cannot deplete our vegetation but at the same time the people must also cook their food. Why can the government make LPG always available and affordable to all Ghanaians. It is not only in the North that trees are cut for charcoal or firewood for cooking. This is common sense

I wonder whether our leaders know that charcoal is being exported. Airconditioners are no substitute for a good natural cool breeze. Leaders stand up. Cutting of trees should be prevented.

Everyday no gas ,no gas,no gas, what do expect them to get energy for cooking. Even in the city they don't have enough gas for every one,how much more our rural folks. Charcoal is still being used in European countries. What we need is innovation. I know a lady from Silicon valley,USA who was named among 30 young entrepreneurs for 2013 for producing charcoal out of corn husks which widely used during winter. Charcoal can also be produced from the coconut husk that I see piled up on my home by the young hard working guys who sell coconut water for a living. All that waste that is now a problem to dispose of can be used to make charcoal for us to use and create employment for our youths. Banning charcoal use when we can not even provide enough gas for the minority of us using it will be suicidal. Let's use innovation, let's use all the rice, maize and coconut husks that we have.
