What cultural and religious barriers will prevent men from becoming midwives? If men who are doctors have the right to examine women, what on earth prevents the same men from becoming midwives? We must be abreast with civilization and should not be like an ostrich tha buries its head in the sand.Mr Asare Bediako's suggestion must be given serious consideration. Seeing the genitalia of women is not something new to men.

I think that what the ladies are trying to say is that some women (especially in rural areas) are not comfortable with men examining them. I, for one, prefer female gynaecologists and I always seek them first.

The unintended consequences are just too much. Let's leave this they way we found it--only women midwives.
Let's count the problems:
Some male Dentists are known to have given their women patients a potion and make them drowsy. Then they have sex with them.
a woman in coma in a hospital got pregnant by a male worker at the clinic.
a hospital worker was caught having sex with a dead woman.
What I am talking about is happening more and more frequently. But the big question is: which man in his right mind would use a male midwife instead of a female one? And who is the male who wants to be a midwife. That person will starve to death since no one would require his services.
No man wants another man looking at the private of his dear wife.

There should be no cultural or religious barriers to a man who wants to become a midwife. The saying that 'WHAT MEN CAN DO WOMEN CAN ALSO DO' is vice versa. We have male doctors, gynaecologists & obstetricians already. Midwifery is a vocation or job, anyone should be allowed to learn or practice it irrespectice of their gender. Above all, it is against the Human rights convention for one to be discriminiate in such circumstance. There need to be more education of the populace that we are all created equal as humans and should be treated as such regardless of our skin colour, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religious affiliation and status/position of someone. It is only bigots and extremists who cannot tolerate such equality.

iT IS DIFFICULT TO APPRECIATE THE INTRICASIES OF THE HEALTH SECTOR IF YOU DO NOT WORK IN IT. IF A DOCTOR(EVEN A GYNECOLOGIST) IS EXAMINING A PRIVATE A CLIENT OF THE OPPOSITE SEX, THERE HAS TO BE A CHAPERONE TO PREVENT BEING SUED UNECCESSARILY. IN OTHER WORDS, IF A FEMALE DOCTOR HAS TO EXAMINE YOUR PENIS THERE MUST BE ANOTHER PERSON IN THE ROOM TO CHAPERONE, SO THERE CANNOT BE MALE MIDWIVES BECAUSE THE BIRTHING PROCESS REQUIRES THAT A WOMAN'S PRIVATE PARTS BE ON DISPLAY. I DOUBT ANY MAN COMMENTING ON THIS, OR THE PHARMACIST WHO MADE THAT STATEMENT HAS WATCHED THE DELIVERY OF A BABY BEFORE. SO I HOPE THAT HE FOCUSES ON DISPENSING DRUGS AND DESISTS FROM VENTURING INTO OTHER AREAS WHERE HIS IGNORANCE WILL BE DISPLAYED.

I am not just arguing, i am telling you what we call standards of practise. We always have chaperones around, it may be anurse, another doctor or an orderly. The person may not be introduced to you as a chaperone but that is what theyare there for. So if we cannot provide chaperones for every male midwife in the district, then it would not be feasible. It is not just a health issue, but alsoa legal issue since, people may end up being sued for harrassment. A midwive does not just deliver the baby, but has to examine the patient multiple times, and that is where the legal issues occur. Male gynecologists, examine in the presence of nurses, midwives, medical students and female doctors. We are not just arguing on this platform for nothing but we are also educating ourselves so please do not simply make assumptions

For every male midwife, we would need an additional female nurse, or female doctor to chaperone him. Why dont we simply encourage more female midwives instead of paying two people to do the job of one person?

No male should be discriminated against in their application for a position as a trainee midwife. Being a feminist has thought me to accept that we are all created equal both male and female. That is why the human rights convention as passed to place emphasise on universally accepted rules. Our culture has nothing to do with men being prevented from practising as midwives. We have male doctors, gynaecologists, obstetricians who may examine a pregnant woman with the assistance or in presence of a chaperone. WHAT MEN CAN DO, WOMEN CAN ALSO DO AND VICE VERSA. I RIGHTLY AGREE WITH MR BADU ON THIS. I HATE DISCRIMINATION IN EMPLOYMENT AND OTHER POSITIONS BECAUSE OF ONE'S GENDER OR SEX.
As a woman I have been examined by both male and female health practitioners. It doesn't affect what I feel and in any case, I have a voice not to keep quiet if any of them behaves inappropriately or unprofessionally. What I seek in for my health to be improved and to leave all forms of prejudice that will prevent me from achieving that.

I agree that if there is a chaperone, we can have male midwives, but we are talking about a district settings, where it is difficult to even get one nurse posted there. So lets be realistic for now,who knows what the future holds, but we cannot ask for the unrealistic now. Male nurses are very good nurses, but even they are limited because it is difficult to put them on female wards in our big hospitals, how much more in a delivery suite?bUT if we could guarantee chaperones in the district, then i am all for it

The oint we are discussiong involves examining private parts. Male doctors work on female wards but need a chaperone to examine breasts and genitals. In the same vein, male nurses work on female wards but cannot give a female patient a bed bath without a chaperone, and so they are usually not posted to female wards by their superiors. Please do not just jump the gun when you are reading my comments. Take your time and analyze it first. So a male health workers do work on female wards, but require chaperones if they will be handling private parts. If a female is on admission for malaria, there is no need for a chaperone because no private part will be examined but if she is on admission for cervical cancer, she will be examined or attended to with a chaperone. The issue at stake involves private parts and not simply men attending to women. There isd no problem with that, but we are talking about a peculiar issue. I am simply telling you what is the standard practice. And there is no point calling me ignorant, it does not change my intelligence quotient in any way.

Put what you think as standard aside. There are male nurses in most developed world even though they are not a majority of the profession. The standard is that any one should not be discriminated against because of their gender. If a male midwife, doctor or gynaecologist should handle a patient negligently, the law of tort is there to let them compensate the patient for the breach of duty that caused their loss. It goes in the same way if the patient should be sexually assaulted.
