Ghana has been ranked third most perceived corrupt country among 129 countries with free press.
This is the latest corruption perception index report issued by Gallup. Ghana scored 89 percent behind Czech Republic and Lithuania.
The Gallup report comes on the back of series of investigative reports pointing to corruption in various sectors.
The latest Gallup poll was conducted between April and May 2012 on perception of countries with free and limited press around the world. Ghana was recognized among the countries with free press.
The report shows that majority of people in the 108 out of 129 countries surveyed in April and May 2012, view corruption as widespread in their government. Ghana scored 89 per cent alongside Portugal, South Africa, Italy, Costa Rica and South Korea, all of which are recognized as free press countries.
Among countries with a free press, the percentage of adults who say corruption is widespread in their government reaches as high as 94% in the Czech Republic and as low as 14% in Sweden.
The ranking means that Ghana is now placed third among free press countries with the highest corruption perceptions worldwide.

Corruption in Ghana has been common since independence. Over the years, Ghana’s score and ranking on the Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index has improved slightly, ranked higher than most African countries.
However, there is a growing perception in Ghana that government-related corruption is on the rise in the Mahama-led administration.
But a Deputy National Propaganda Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Solomon Nkansah, has said fighting corruption in Ghana has become tougher since even some religious leaders are not worthy of trust in recent times.
According to him, Ghanaians should not blame President Mahama for Ghana’s corruption since the late Ex-President Mills was unsuccessful in fighting corruption in his government.
Solomon Nkansah is of a view that, to fight corruption “then we must all be very careful and assess ourselves well. First take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye”.
He, however, said on Adom FM that, “Even in this country, Pastors keep preaching that ‘come and ye shall be rich’…is it not the same money they (Pastors) want? If you willingly give out huge amounts of money in church, trust me, you will be appointed as an elder”.

I am not prepared to condemn the police service outright, because I know that there are many seriously dedicated and conscientious women and men in the service, who put their lives on the line for our protection. The once tranquil and seemingly sleepy towns in the Akwapim region, are now hotbeds of criminal activity, I was a Boy Scout in the 1960's and when we camped, two people would always be on watch duty while others slept, here's a whole police station with 11 prisoners in cells and only one sentry on guard? The Mampong police command seems to be less qualified than some Boy Scout leaders.
The comical part of the story is sgt. Peter Tetteh, who heard GUNSHOTS and came to help without a gun or communication device (a mobile phone,) he almost got shot because the robber,s gun misfired, he dashed to a nearby bank (which is a few hundred meters away,) to call the distressed officer on duty for help, "lord have mercy".
Sgt. Peter Tetteh is a typical keystone cop, when the gun misfired, my grand mother would've knocked out the robber with two good rocks to the chest and head, Sgt. Peter Tetteh ought to be demoted or fired for coming to a gunfight bare handed.

Hardly a day goes by without a report on a child defilement case in the media, and according to child rights groups working on the issue, at least 10 girls under the age 16 are defiled every day in the country.
They say that even though the cases reported in themselves are alarming, they constitute only about 10% of such abuses, as the overwhelming majority of the cases are hushed.
The penalty for defilement was increased in the 1998 amendment to the Criminal Code (ACT 29) to a minimum of seven and a maximum of 25 years without an option of a fine. Yet recent studies show that sexual abuse of children in Ghana is still alarming high.
Figures from the then Ministry for Women and Children Affairs (MOWAC) put the annual case of reported defilement cases at around 800 a year, but according to one of the groups working to stop the practice, Light For Children Ghana, this is only a small portion of an alarming national catastrophe.
For this year alone, Ghana News Agency bulletins have been recording an average of about three defilement case a day.
The majority of the defilement cases are hushed, according to child psychologists, because in some case the victims do not understand what has happened to them or are afraid of being shamed or accused of being bad girls.
Some guardians also prefer to keep such incidence to themselves.
This is especially the case where the abusers happen to be family members. There have also been cases of neighbors, teachers, pastors and all sorts of people abusing girls some as young as two years.
There are also instances where guardians go to the police, but later stop following the case and give up because they find the processes cumbersome, studies indicate.
Making the situation worse, according to Mrs Juliana Azumah, the last Minister for MOWAC, was that the over 50,000 children living and working on the country’s streets were often taken advantage of by sexual predators or run to commercial sex as way of making a living.
Also in certain parts of the country such as in parts of the Upper West Region, for instance, Action Aid Ghana, reports that an average of 50 young girls below the ages of 15 and 17 are abducted for marriage every year in the Jirapa, Lambussie/Karni and Sissala East districts.
Figures at the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) National Secretariat indicate that boys are also sometimes abused sexually, but the vast majority of the victims are girls.

Do we need to beg the GH Army to help. We the tax payers do not pay them just to sit at the barracks. It is time for them to get out of the barracks and help protect Ghanaians.
