Ghana qualify for the World Cup finals

Ghana's long wait for a World Cup finals place ended in emphatic style on Saturday when the Black Stars beat Cape Verde Islands 4-0 to qualify for next year's finals in Germany. The four-time African champions ended their long hoodoo in World Cup qualifying with a one-sided win in the island archipelago to finish comfortable winners of African zone Group Two.

Ghana went into the game virtually assured of a place in Germany with only a slight mathematical chance for their remaining rivals, the Democratic Republic of Congo.

But the Black Stars, who needed one point to make sure, wasted little time in setting off to a comfortable win with Sulley Muntari scoring as early as the fourth minute.

The Udinese midfielder, back in the side after suspension, added a second goal 10 minutes before halftime.

Russian-based winger Laryea Kingston made it 3-0 with a quarter of an hour left and Godwin Attram added the finishing touch two minutes from time.
Ghana, who finished five points clear of the DR Congo and South Africa, first entered the preliminaries for the World Cup in Chile in 1962 but this will be their first appearance at the finals.
