Allotey wins Tema Mobitel Golf

Tema, Oct. 31, GNA - Robert Allotey of Celebrity Golf Course collected a gross score of 137 to win this year's Tema Mobitel Open Golf Championship played at the Tema Country Golf Course on Sunday. Paul Amenyo came second with 136 gross followed by Richard Aziamakpor with a score of 142 gross while F.A. Asorgbah took the fourth position with a score of 143 gross and Koblah Degbe and Patrick Paitey followed in that order with a gross score of 142 and 146 respectively. Valentina Manteaw won the Ladies category with 160 gross with Florence Etwi-Barimah coming second with 170 gross while Joy Arkutu placed third with 173 gross.

Vincent Torgah came first in the Professionals' Event with 261 gross with Emos Korblah placing second with 2785 gross while Victor Brave-Mensah was third with 276 gross and Anthony Amuzu took the fourth position with 280 gross while Joseph Mawuli came fifth with 281 gross. The Juniors event was won by Frank Quarshie with a net score of 56 followed by Asante Antwi at the second position with 57 net while J. Mensah placed third with 61 net.

The two-day 36-Hole Scratch competition that was opened to amateur and professional golfers throughout the country, was sponsored by Millicom Ghana Limited.

Mr Joe Aggrey, Deputy Minister for Education, Youth and Sports in an address said everything possible would be done by the Ministry to ensure that Golf is well developed sustained. He said this can however not be achieved solely by the government and therefore called on the private sector to assist towards developing the sport.

Mr Aggrey advised land developers to desist from encroaching on lands earmarked for sports development. The Deputy Minister also appealed to corporate bodies and institutions to support Ghana to host the African Cup of Nations in the year 2008.

Mr Stanley Okoh, General Manager (Sales and Marketing) of Millicom Ghana Limited said as part of the company's corporate responsibility, it would continue with its support to the various communities.
