Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare, a lecturer at the GIMPA Business School has urged football clubs in the country to upgrade football matches to a lucrative form of family entertainment in order to attract a lot more fans to the various stadia.
He made this known at the GFA organized seminar for both premier and Division One club at Alisa Hotel, on the theme “strategies to attract fans to the stadia”.
According to him, they must start introducing extensions to their main product such as food and drinks, music and club merchandise to attract more football fans.
“Creating a family life atmosphere at the various stadium that would make it possible for football fans to bring along their wife and kids to the stadium.”
Viewership at the various league centers in the last decade has been nothing to write home about and this is largely due to the unfriendly nature that is created at our soccer venues.
For him what fans demand of a stadium is a clean friendly environment which has all the necessary safe requirement to make them feel comfortable and at home.
“The clubs must employ all available PR tools to reduce the allegations of corruption about them and the league since a tainted brand is very hard to associate with.”
“Another thing the clubs in Ghana must take a critical look if they want to make some more money is merchandising.”
“Fans find it very hard to get club paraphernalia which goes a long way to endear them to the club, Manchester United made £190m in 2014 from commercial revenues and such a feat can be replicated here in Ghana if the right mechanisms are put in place.”
He urged the GFA and the clubs to partner the media to promote their brand stating that “you cannot promote club or football matches without the media, hence the media should form an integral part in every club’s strategy to attract fans to the stadia.”
