Jordan Ayew sets conditions for his Ghana return

Marseille attacker Jordan Ayew says he will return to the Ghana national team when his position in the squad is more secure.

The France-based slapped in his temporary resignation letter to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Tuesday claiming he wants to concentrate on his club career to build on his experience to help him gain a regular place in the Black Stars squad.

The Marseille player was excluded from the initial 26-man squad for the tournament in South Africa which was announced by coach Kwesi Appiah in December.

Ayew says he wants to stay away from the team to work hard with his club to gain the necessary experience to ensure that when he returns to the Black Stars his position is more secure.

“The reasons for my decision, although personal, I believe, would eventually inure to the benefit of the Black Stars,” Jordan Ayew said in his retirement letter to the GFA.

“The reason being that in this period of my temporary absence I intend not only to work hard in my club as a young player so I can obtain the quality, experience and stature necessary for a call up to play in the national team.

“But also ensure that my membership of the national team when I soon come out of my temporary resignation endures in a more secure manner so as to avoid the situation where I am unsure as to when my services are required for the national team.”

Ayew’s decision to leave the Black Stars comes just three weeks before Ghana takes on Sudan in a 2014 World Cup qualifier in Kumasi.

The attacker has scored twice in his 10 matches for the Black Stars.
